Show v H all LEGISLA TIO N mining laws needed in state five good road bills to oe be introduced at coming session Sa aslon with two or more pro practical atal miners as aa members of the nn at state legislature it Is believed that some of the needed mining laws will be enacted T J parmalee of carbon county and william archibald archabald of summit county are two men who I 1 now tile the business thoroughly and who may work with J B E state mine inspector for far the passage of some now new laws inspector pettit says that one of the most badly needed laws in utah at present la Is in the gilsonite fields the gilsonite mimeo oxe are comparative ly new and for that reason mason the laws do not cover them am owing ing to the high explosive power of tho the dust in these mines every precaution must b taken at the present time says mr pettit most of the mines mimes axe are worked by day light as a light ha not yet been perfected which can b be used in the mines in ift a recent arti article cler on the subject vt af the mines and the needed le legislation I the intermountain inter mountain republican says in some of the gilsonite mines incandescent candescent lignite lights have bem been used but these too have been found impractical owing to the fact that the gilsonite dust duet attracted by the heit heat ys the incandescent globe melts on the exterior and soon forms forma a crust through which the light cannot hauet rate within 24 hours the dust often so BO covers the globes that they can hardly be seen ten feet away it is for this reason that all of the work or nearly all Is being done by daylight at the present time A lamp his hie now beon been perfected it to Is said which can n be used in the mines 14 i it ze Q only in its experimental tage and little Is known of its worth but even with the lights lighta guarded and other precautions taken it is a constant danger around a gilsonite mine A light thrown into any amount of gilsonite will not cause an explosion as aa a general rule the gilsonite will melt with great rapid ity and within a short time envelop the flame and smother it the dang or er comes when any ot of the gilsonite dust comes comee in contact with the flame it is more dangerous than gunpowder in this respect and is said to be fax far diore powerful powers ua in these mines a supply of water ta 19 tho the great thing needed and the legislature may make some provision tor tor this better ventilation Is also needed not alone in the gilsonite mines but in the coal and metal mines of the state in the gil gilsonite mines a careful search of each man main la Is made before he goes to work in the mines to see that he carries no matches with him inspector pettit has also made a ruling that no bins or other storage places for far gilsonite shall ahall be placed clacer than feet from the ora ent trance ranco to the mine thus safeguarding in the mine it if anything should happen at the bin other bills to be introduced at the coming session of the legislature will deal with the question of good roads for the state stata there will be at least five such bills presented one of these bills provides pr oides for the employment of convict labor another for uniformity of construction under the supervision of the state engineer one for wide tires on vehicles and two others of a similar charac character terr the united states government has already given aid to other states in the matter of good roads by lending experts and advice on construction and material d delegation bleg aaion will ba b asked to make an effort to secure it milar favors for this state |
