Show UINTAH OIL FIELDS an article reproduced from thi the intermountain inter mountain republican that should be carefully read john T pope objects to certain edi tonal mention in the vernal express wherein it was stated that he either stretched his hia imagination or was stuffing the mining editor of the intermountain republican or both in regard to the resent recent now discoveries of oil in uintah county below we reproduce tho the rrt article icle published january 26 that we considered highly colored NEWEST OIL FIE FIELD LD IS AD A EAD DEAD SECRET flow from tunnel supplies supplies refinery in uintah county railroads use product tonopah millionaires invade field said to be best discovered A field oil of fine quality covering thousands of acres acrea a refinery that has been in operation for nearly a year and has been selling high grade lubricating oil to railroads rall roada for months moneyed men from nevada pouring thousands of dollars into the field buying up acre after acre of the best land bandsuch such is the condition near virgin uintah county and the discoveries of oil in this section of utah have just juat come to light so ao closely has haa the secret been guarded carded in tonopah newspapers the fast last several weeks have appeared several references to tag an entirely now new oil field in utah which several tonopah millionaires were preparing to exploit nothing could be learned from them in regard to the new field except that it was much farther north than the virgin field they were confident however that both in area covered and in quantity and quality of oil it would produce the new field w prove to be one of the greatest if not the greatest in the united states the intermountain inter mountain republican hs has discovered that the new naw field is in the uintah county extending in an easterly direction from virgin and that in extent it is about miles east and west by 60 miles north and south it is is discovered further that not worldly only has oil in kajing paying quantities alrea already y been discovered in the field but that for nearly a year a refinery has bas been in 0 operation aeration there almost as secret secretly as tale the kentucky runs an illicit illicit still has this enterprise been operated not because the owners feared the government overn ernnie ment nt but because they desired desire ff to steal a march on standard oil in the matter of establishing a market for their product the product is a lubricating oil of peculiarly high grade and a market for even more than the refinery can produce has been established solely on merit the owners of the original well and refinery realizing that they cannot always keep their business business a secret have taken up all the land they can conveniently handle and have been letting in some of their friends A party comprising william 0 la grange oil expert of tonopah To was in this city a few days ago on the way to the new field to close up their holdings there and start active development work they declared that when the truth became known there would be one of the te great 1 est rushes to that field ever known known in I 1 this country I 1 utah people will have a right to bo be surprised when whon they learn that there has been in oRe operation ration in this state nearly a year an oil refinery only five miles from a railroad the finished product from which finds a ready market at from 30 cents to 1 a gallon with demand for them which now exceeds the capacity of the plant to supply there will be further reason for surprise in the information that the crude oil for that refinery is not produced from a well but from a tunnel and that the alowis flow is so strong that although every discovered crevie in the tunnel has been plugged hundreds of gallons of the precious fluid are running to waste every ever y day this is the story told by john T pope president of the tunnel oil corn com with headquarters at vernal van gny I 1 t tah a and confirmed by by L F harr the companas comp anys sales agent in this city mr pope has lived at vernal the last 23 years ears and for ten years was sheriff of atah uintah county lie he has also been town attorney for several terms ile he started about two years ago boring for oil at a point ten miles southeast of dragon terminus of the rio grande companas comp anys uintah railroad 4 in drilling to the depth of feet said id mr pope in telling of his expert empei I 1 once nce we went through three oil strata we had just penetrated the fourth stratum and had more oil than we could handle when we wa discovered that by going goin into a nearby canyon canyon that cut the formation formation we could without doubt tap the first stratum witha with a tunnel we expected to drive tho the tunnel in feet bea before ore getting results but when it was in feet the oil burst from the breast of the tunnel like a tream stream of water we were unable to proceed farther on account of the flow the inside of the tunnel was patched up with concrete but fully 1000 gallons a day escape besides what we use with the oil running to waste we set about to find a market for it and found that the surest way to do was to build a refinery nery of our own we nye set about it quietly because we did nt care to stir up opposition from the standard oil company the th refinery was built last spring it has a capacity of 2000 gallons sarini a day ay the oil is the highest grade lubricating oil ever discovered it contains only a trace of illuminating oil from it we make everything from axle grease to the finest quality of cewin sewing machine oil it has a gilsonite gils ils onite base and it will not nob congeal rr r gum under any circumstances the temperature of 40 degrees below zer zero tylre hta not L the slightest effect upon it we produce four different grades of t the e finished product a boiler comp compound ounO an en englis oil arctic oil and paint for me metal t our boiler compound and engine oil are now in use on four different railroads and the interlocking switch company and other concerns operating intricate machinery will use nothing but our lubricating oil the boiler compound aund is used for cleaning boilers of aoth both locomotives and stationary engines A quart of it a day squirted into a boil boiler through ergh a hose will keep keen the inside free from scales and it is found to bo be much better and chea cheaper er than tam knocking them off on with a hammer nier the paint for metal is really an enarce en enamel arne when spread over a surface it becomes as hard and smooth as glass there is only seven per cent of waste in refining ning the crude oil 1 I honestly believe that th the e field will prove to be the greatest ever discovered we tapped the best of it by any means we started our well where we did because it is near the railroad there is a chance for much larger producing wells in other parts of the field I 1 have seen outcrops of oil sand feet across thirty miles northwest of us is found fuel and illuminating mina ting oil some of it is so BO high grade rade that the crude oil will burn in a camp as it is taken from the ground my associates and i nave have about w acres of land in different parts of f the held we have two standard etan dard rigs one of which we shall lend to the ton opah and california people who intend to get busy right awa away V the other rig we shall operate ours elves within another month or two there will be no end to the oil excitement in that country or I 1 am very much mistaken mr pope says that his company has haa a standing offer of for its producing property but as the pro property ert OOT val is paying on the basis of valuation the offer is not even considered if the above story is true and mr pope says he was correctly quoted we must admit that the tunnel oil people have operated this refinery I 1 almost as secretly as the kentucky moons biner runs an illicit still if the story is true we must also alao admit that the republican and the tonopah sun have scooped the express and that mr pope did not stretch his imagination nor was he stuffing the mining editor for that reason we hasten to make the correction by reproducing the republican story so that the world may know of the wonderful oil fields of uintah county so recently discovered the express was not aware that this company makes everything from axle grease to the finest quality of sewing mac machine hine oil while we have been told that a great many byproducts by products can be made from this oil we never knew that they were already being made we have known also for the past year or two that they had a number of large settling or storage tanks into which the oil was piped from the tunnel but did not know that other articles besides the oil were on the market and in use we do not now nor have we ever had any intention of undervaluing any of the wonderful resources of this section of the state or to injure the standing or business of any man but we must say that when we first read the abo abobo ve article we considered it highly colored |
