Show CITIZENS NOMINATE resolutions resolution appose franchise to co and favor municipal ownership of public utilities the citizens mass masa convention was held in the court house last friday night mayor johnson called the convention to order and made a brief beef address in which he be called attention to to the custom of but one non port isan municipal ticket J B philippi was elected chairman and J T mcconnell secretary the committee on permanent organization was composed of B D Nc beker mrs mra richard pope and mrs christensen the committee on resolutions was composed of J A wilson mrs mclelland and peter hanson when the chair announced that the convention was ready to receive nominations for mayor peter hanson propos the name of john mcandrews the nomination was seconded by dr hullinger mr mcandrews was nominated by acclamation there was a little political feeling displayed when J A wilson proposed that the convention endorse L it II woodard the republican nominee for councilman for the four year term mayor johnson was on his hia feet latant instantly objecting to the endorsement endorse mant lie he declared that it would be plenty of time to endorse republicans for office when the citizens had run out of material materia 1 but until that time he was opposed to i any such action ile he named W A taylor for the place wilson withdrew his motion and seconded the nomination made by the mayor taylor was wag nominated without opposition N J meagher charles hardy and richard pope were nominated councilmen for the two year term lon mccarrell McCar reIl B D and geo A davis were placed in nomination but they declined and the three above mentioned were nominated for the office of city marshal the names of george bennett and sam Carpen tir tr were proposed carpenter hecei ed 28 votes tiiu ou al 21 2 v received 11 votes calder was nominated for foe city recorder george A davis davia for city treasurer and B D for justice of the peace the committee on resolutions reported at length covering all phases of politics from national down to precinct one paragraph especially obnoxious to some come of the members of the convention w was as stricken out A part of the platform adopted is considered good while some other parts are not worthy of a thomas jefferson or an abraham lincoln below will bo be found a synopsis of a few of the paragraphs worthy of notice the encouragement of local improve ments menta construction of factories public buildings good streets and pavements and looking to better sanitation one paragraph alluded in the highest words of praise to the work now being done towards building telephone lines thereby connecting vernal with the reservation towns and the outside world and the work being done towards securing electric lights and power A suggestion was mado mada to the business men that a broad and liberal policy be adopted by them towards the reservation people who are struggling in the face of adversity to build homes out of the deserts for themselves and posterity if the citizens ticket is 13 elected they declare that vernal is not to be a wide open town nor vt it to be conducted along puritanical lines the last paragraph reads as fol follow lowe we are opposed to the granting of f franchises ranchi ses to private individuals and corporations we favor the policy of the municipality owning and operating its rights and franchise including water works electric lights street railroads and telephone systems take it altogether the ticket is made up of representative citizens and with perhaps one or two exceptions is considered good but it would be utterly impossible to nominate a ticket that would suit everybody chas hardy is the only republican norrina nominated ted and he has declined the nomination |
