Show U S A notes among the qualities that conduce to success in life continuity is by no means meana the least important many there are who might have attained to positions of honor and trust t among their fellows had bad they hut but persisted in a course of action adopted but having allowed circumstances trivial or otherwise ise to swerve them from their purpose they have drifted into mediocrity and become submerged in the crow d that follow especially is this true in school work those these who enter school at the beginning and attend regularly and continuously until the doss close are almost almos t positively certain to surpass those who put forth only spasmodic efforts this abis too sn in spite of disparity in intellect as against the bomer fomer ormer brilliancy and capacity are to be sure qualities to be counted with bytwork but work and persistency are excellent substitutes for them and furnish a basis for their highest expression it Is gratifying to report that there is still an earnest energetic band of students at the academy determined to finish their courses with credit to themselves and to the institution yet yel it must be confessed that a relatively large number have discontinued some by force of circumstances and with a full determination to return again next year and some because of a lack of it la Is to be hoped that parents and pupils will cooperate to the end that greater con stancy shall be secured in the future in efficiency and equipment the academy is growing rapidly the working library asset will be more than doubled this year books of reference are being added every month attention too is being given to hall decorations only a short time ago the elocutionary department part ment through J R robinson the special instructor in the work presented the school with a beautiful nag flag tho the i stars and strips patriotism Is enjoined both by precept and environment the devotional hour was occupied by judge booth ilia talk was interesting and full of practical suggestion among other things lie he urged most forcefully upon the students the necessity of making the most of their opportunities thus justifying the great financial sacrifices involved in sustaining such excellent schools nearly 76 per cent of all revenues in utah he declared goes to the support of schools come again brother booth we like to hear bear you tuesday morning a very interesting debate was conducted by the student body miss ella wimmer presided and the teachers acted as judges the question resolved that grant was a greater general than lee was waa championed by miss clara collier for the affirmative and charles charlea iverson for the negative while all participating in the discussion did well charles iverson of the 2nd and year class and clara of the first year particularly distinguished themselves by a very narrow margin the decision was given to the affirmative side aide now permit a lew few observations upon a matter of public concern many district school boys particularly from vernal and glines some perhaps front from other wards and some who are rot not in n school may be among the number con gregath on our school grounds every saturday and engage to put it mildly in n lawless and ious amusements their language as ag reported by actual witnesses is disgraceful and degrading furthermore they chew tobacco and smoke and in some instances puff the smoke through the windows into the school rooms apparently in open defiance of the ideals for which the school stands there Is also a mater ial fal side to the trouble several window lights have been broken and two axes earned carried off within the past few weeks the efforts of the parents and teachers to stop this lawlessness should be enforced if necessary by city officials we wish to say a ay in regard to the matter that the campus is 13 not open to public amusements on saturday Satu iday or any other time only upon express permission of those in control last saturday evening the students were very successful in accomplishing one of the most difficult tasks of school life that of surprising the principal Ever everything Everth thing mg worked out with the greatest harmony in fact a gallon lon of ice cream V worked its way out of the back hall without ever being botic ed one thing we are glad for though the freezer was returned before morning the school wishes to take this opportunity of thanking bro thomas weir for the very able asgis assistance tance he gave us in decorating the building there is no question about the old U S A looking the best it has ever done and those who attended the surprise on bro snow were undoubtedly convinced that ingenuity and originality are qualities that are alej in no way lacking in the acl school the regular visiting committee bros merkley smith and bartlett were with us last tuesday bros merkley and smith gave the he boys good advice along the lines of newall nees and determination we hope to see shorter intervals between the visits of this committee all the surprises have not been ott on the teachers lately the eighth grade was very happily surprised wednesday morning when they were informed that lion hon don B colton would occupy the time of their history class bro col tons remark they always are arc were full of things to think about full of thought that will give the students the correct prospective of the subject of history and cause them to put forth even a greater effort than they have already been doing |
