Show letter from ely A letter from john mease to judge D M frost concerning the latest boom camp in nevada may be of interest to many of our readers who are contemplating a visit to the camp we herewith print a portion of the letter as follows 4 t well I 1 can say eay that I 1 have looked 0 oer er ely carefully its resources both boh visible and prospective have talked with all classes of people and my con is 13 that the camp is all right and has a bright future and will in time giva employment to a great many peo pie but it will not begin to grow until next spring for th reaton that owing to tle scarcity of building material caused by the great ecat demand made upon the mills of the west by san fran cisco for building material much of which is contracted for months ahead 11 tjien en again the realty owners are asking fabulous prices for lots in the present townsite te which rag las caused the raili oad people or more properly speaking the nevada consolidated mining company to buy up a one fourth section two miles below the pi besent town on which they are laying out a townsite and it now looks and I 1 believe that will be the main town Ps aa soon as tho lots lota are put upon the market as aa this company has bought all tho the batet in this vicinity tho the present town will have to depend on its wells wella entirely for water A ater in the future this has aly put a stop to all real estate transfers for the present another bad feature is that the realty owners in town will not build themselves though business property rents for exorbitant prices most any kind of an old shack lents for per month and it costs costa from 10 to ac dollars per month to got get ground gi aund enough on which to pitch a tena these old fossils who have been plodding along barely eking out an existence for years all seem to have gone crazy should the price on the new town lots ba placed reason u which uichi ichi I 1 understand f from rom reliable sources n going to be the case the old timers will wake up one of these mornings wondering where they are at after the railroad reaches here there will nv ill be twelve miles of heavy A ork up 1 lie cana on to reach the mines all of which will have to be completed before any consider able force of men will all ba b put tu aik oik in the mines the smelter will bo be located sixteen miles from here and it will also have to be completed before they will commence to take lake out any ore to agoti amount it all of which cousee you see tak takes estime lime living expenses hero here too are all out of proportion to prices paid for labor at present there are about men A in the district about as many leave everyday every day as come in I 1 he accommodations at present furnished the laborers are miserable and they wont stand for it all of this though will be rent eddied during the next 12 mon month th it now costs 2 60 50 per day daiy to live here and wages are only 3 50 the restaurants tau rants and rooming houses are simply limply coming coining money the saloons also making big money as the license entire is only 15 per month in this state and they never close however should I 1 not stay here this winter I 1 shall certainly return in tho the spring at cherr cherry y creek there is nothing do ng except a little development work but there are some promising properties there I 1 have met a good many mining men of prominence and they all speak we well I 1 of the future of chii section but all have the same okmun as I 1 hive that tl tf ere will not be much doing till next furr m r |
