Show myton news one of the most disastrous affairs happened at the mine last lait wednesday afternoon that fhate I 1 has hap happened in this part of the country for many years the gas or after damp killed four men their alamea were elmer hopkins otto anis ada 1 wa W 11 4 foreman and B L it II seems the night shift brid just gone down the shaft to relieve the day shift IM members of the day shift t had gotten in the cage or bucket immediately after af tor tile the night shift had gotten down and the cage took them to the top and the cage as is usual went back at once mice it had not been at the bottom long when the shift boss of the night shift victor barney heard the men at th bottom of the shaft try cry out to hoist thel the cage it v ill III be well to state ahre that victor barney and another mem bar of the ill fated shift chaft had stopped at what Is ia known as aa the lower upper north a station about sixty feet above the bottom ernest lund was with barney they had stopped on the lower upper north to fix the telephone and signal system as aa per instructions from J C charlesworth Charls worth the mine foreman the other four men going on down to their work at the bottom very soon oon after the four had gotten down barney heard them begging for the cage to be pulled up and barney gave the sig ag nal to the engineer to lift the cage but the cage 6 tuck stuck and the men soon coon died barney and lund got up the ladder a distance of nearly eight hundred feel and reported to the foreman that he thought all were dead A rescuing party at once was formed among the miners all of whom stood ready to t go down to their dead comrades C F baker C W penny and albert juelke were the first three down and they found all but in the cage and hopkins II floating in the water which was about three feet at the bottom of the shaft it was about two hours after the accident that the tea buers cuers could get down owing to the bad air in the mine but bul they were persist ant in their efforts even if they had to suffer with the gas and bad air word was at once sent cent to myton 11 II G dark clark and constable bassett at once went out to the mine A jury was summon ded and an inquest held at 11 the morning of april 19 1903 1906 the verdict of the jury was as follows INQUEST duchesne precinct pre wasatch county state of utah an inquest having been held at in inthe the duchesne Du chegne precinct wasatch county anthe on the day of april 1906 before 11 II G clarl clark justice of peace in duchesne precinct in said county upon the bodies of elmer hopkins II otto anisy amisy W H foreman and B L biord Ri ord there lying dead by the jurors whose names are herewith subscribed bed the said jurors upon their oaths oatha do say that the said men came to their death on april 18 1906 while employed in the gariette Pa riette mine and the death of said men was caused by burning gas and we the jury further find from the evidence that there is ia no ladder reaching to bottom of said mine and the cage having become fast said men had no means of escape and w we e the jury further find that the mine has been closed for the last twelve hours with no air pumps running making it exceedingly dangerous to enter the mine at this time thereby preventing the jury maling making the personal investigation desired in witness whereof said jurors have hereunto set their hands this nineteenth day of april one thousand nine hundred and six signed W M GENTRY D T E M JONES E W davis was a myton visitor last week deputy sheriff clyde was in town a few days ago hiring men to work en cn the lake fork bridge something ought to be done on the bridge at myton and people have written the commissioners ners from here telling them of the condition of the bridge A smal amount of money spent now would probably save a great deal later on |
