Show important proclamation issued by president ident grover Cle cleveland voland washington sept 27 the president has issued the following proclamation whereas congress congre sal by a statute approved march 22 1882 and by statutes in furtherance and amendment thereof defined the crime crime of bigamy polygamy and unlawful cohabitation in the torri torn tories and other plaats within the exclusive jurisdiction of tho the united states and prescribed penalty for such crimes and whereas on or about the ath day of october 1890 tho the church of jesus christ of latter day I 1 saints mints commonly known as tho the mormon church through its president issued a manifesto proclaim ing tho the purpose of said church no longer to sanction the practice of polygamous inar marriages and C calling upon lipon all and adherents of said church to obey said laws of the united states in reference to said subject in mattor attar and whereas on oil the fth day of january A D 1893 benjmiin Benj harrison then president of the united states did declare mid and grant full pardon 4 and nui amnesty nesty to certain offenders under said acts upon condition of future f obedience to their as is full set forth in said proclamation of amnesty and pardon and whereas upon the evidence now furnished me I 1 am satisfied the members and adherents of said church generally abstain from plural marriages and polygamous co habitation and are now living livin in III obedience to the laws and the time has now arrived when the interests inheres ta of public justice and morality will bo be p promoted L t by tl the 0 o granting of amnesty and pardon to all such guch offenders as complied with the condition of said proclamation including such of said offenders as have been convicted under the provisions of said act now therefore 1 I grover clevland president of the united states by virtue of the powers in mo me vested do hereby declare and grant a full amnesty and pardon to all persons who havo bava in violation of said acts committed either of the offenses of polygamy bigamy adultery or unlawful cohabitation under the color of polygamous or plural marriage or who having been convicted of violation of 0 said act are now suffering buffering deprivation of civil rights in consequence of the same excepting all persona who have not complied with the conditions coil contained bained in said executive proclamation of january the fth 1893 in witness whereof etc GROVER GEOVER CLEVELAND 71 |
