a patch the farm houses aa a 0 general thing bore exterior appearances of comfort I 1 but the fences are miserable being chiefly constructed of frail wicker work of willow twigs twigg or decaying cottonwood r poles iri in this respect the ithe farms south of the city for eight miles or more do not compare with tho those le of box elder davis and weber coun counties ti ies they do riot not present the neat systematic e substantial appearance that the farmers north of this city have evinced in the construction of their in closures the lands appear to be laid out in small lots some containing good wheat oats barley and potatoes others poor discouraging 0 disconsolate looking patches of corn already turned yellow from neglect and its non adapt ability to the climate below gardinere ner I 1 s mills HIS we turned to the left and bore off in ae the direction of tho rising sun about noon we reached the cottonwood ton wood a mile or so HO below the mouth of the canyon here we and partook afan of an excellent lunch which had been prepared by mrs ervine and after the animals were thoroughly rested we hitched up and drove on at a swing ewing pole a short distance below the canyon wo we paid toll and passed on entering the the kanyon the low hills hilla covered with verdure gradually disappear and ana rough bold rocks meet onos gaze on du every side aide the road becomes narrow devious and dangerous the ebar character acter of the stream changes and the waters come ru rushing alling and skipping shipping and dancing along over the boulders that are strewn in its bed was washing h ing the base of the crags that projects into its course or rushing recklessly Esly over the rough rocks fretting and frothing at every plunge and dashing its clear blue waters to white spray against against the abrupt sides of the rugged jagged mountains some of the scenes odthe of the cottonwood if transferred to canvass by the art of the linin lin mcra erg brush blush would rival in beauty and grandeur the most romantic scenes attributed to the hud eon bon or mine the mountains walling in the rushing roaring waters are arc unsurpassed for wild inimitable grandeur towering above you yen on either cither side sid C bold bola magnificent ont and serrated presenting 0 a retreating front broken by huge pro ejecting masses of slate and granite irregular and frightful to tile the view a and nd dotted here and there with an all occasional inoc cas ional mountain hr fir clad in its evergreen or reclining amid the rocks which have been strewn in promiscuous profusion by the hand band of nature over the mountain sides lay the re mains and relics of bf those giants who once withstood the storm and breasted its ite repeated attacks tt acks and lifted dign their as they swayed to and fro to the prompting of the breeze andre and ro sp oridea to the echo or of the sighing pines for twelve miles the wild majestic grandeur of these frowning giants whose summits pierce the clouds and whose bases are laved caved by the waters that roll and tumble and ana rumble by the scene was unchair unchanged 0 except from grand to baor more e grand and the wild awful sublimity increased aa is we advanced until the whole contour of nature changed above the first BMW mill on oil tho the stream the rn mountain oll sides bides from there were covered with a pine trees and or ali which lall were in turn succeeded by the clear rays of the sun and cool refreshing bi breezes cazes from the snow clad hills bills around venturing the fasce ascent lit of a bold mountain peak to the so southeast south nith east of the lake and the highest point in view irom from that valley valler we 4 descried a number of small lakes up in the ille mountain tops which poured their waters over ledges of rocks for nearly a mile into cottonwood one of them the farthest to the couth east looked like an enchanted scene it seemed a as if a place had been scooped out of the mountains for it and its retreated to the clouds it ia i literally walled in in and ao no mortal has ever dared to tread its banks cerp perpetual emual snow is far below its location on the opposite mountain sides bides but it really looks beautiful and entrancing the small lakes were encircled on the west and southwest by a necmi cirelo of enow clad mountains that appeared to frown on all beneath to the south could be seen been the valley of provo and valleys beyond it to the north through an opening in the mountain tops and the blue hazy atmosphere the yiew new ended with gith the horizon where the waters
