The officers thumb thesa good driven to the curb and give them a good talking but It is not tht tongua lashing the drivers expect. ex-pect. Instead, It Is part of the Georgia Geor-gia highway patrol's policy of stopping stop-ping safe drivers and commending them on their highway manners. Caught driving safely near Vat' dosta last week was Dawdle Dell's' "champeen greenhorn," Coliard Green, vacationing in the south' land with his wife, Blondine. He was sputtering along in hi 1930 Ford, not exceeding 25 m.p.h., driving on hit side of the road, and veering off a straight Una not one lota. Suddenly, the shrill whine of a siren in his left ear forced him to ram his brake pedal to the floor. Neither Coliard nor his brakes are as quick as they were In 1930, so the car continued in motion until Coliard in confusion turned the front wheels Into a ditch. A police cruiser ground to a dusty halt beside him. Blondine screamed. A burly patrolman leaped from the cruiser. "I must compliment you on not exceeding 50 m. p. h.," he growled politely. Coliard felt bet ter. The way his aoupe rattled, no telling how fast he had been going. . "You are not drunk," sneered the cop. "Congratulations, Budl, And although it's not very inspiring, stopping a guy for sticking to his side of the road, I must thank you for driving on the right." Just then a new car roared past, doing 90 on the left side, veering in a corkscrew spiral, and leaving a trail of whiskey bottles. The cop sighed. "Don't have to worry about those guys any more since we stop the good drivers now. But I can't utter nothing but compliments, and I got few choice cuss words cankering in my chest." Blondine hadn't recovered from her fright. She begged, "Officer, please let us go. My husband will buy a driver's license soon as we get home. I promise!" A new light came into the policeman's police-man's eyes as he gazed at Coliard. "You dirty, law-breaking skunk i" he snarled. "Welcome to Georgia 1" |
