Show DANGER INSIDE AUTOMOBILES DURING SUMMER The Humane Society of Utah cautions pet owners against leaving their animals or children inside in-side automobiles during the warm weather months mon-ths as it could spell death ! On a warm day, the interior in-terior of a car can heat up very quickly. A dog or child can only withstand a temperature of 107 to 108 for only a very short time before suffering irreparable ir-reparable brain damage or death. On a hot day at 85, the temperature in a car with the windows slightly open will reach 102 in ten minutes and 120 in 30 minutes. Should an animal show signs of heatstroke, the animal should be removed remov-ed from the automobile and immersed into water to lower the temperature or wet down the animal with a garden hose, especially the head and neck. The animal should be taken to a veterinarian for follow-up care and treatment. Especially susceptible to heatstroke are puppies, older pets, short-nosed breeds and obese animals. Salt Lake City and county ordinances prohibit pro-hibit the keeping of pets inside vehicles for lengthy periods of time and violation of the ordinance or-dinance could result in a legal complaint against the owner and possible impoundment of the animal. |
