Show Vernal Police honor its own The Vernal Police Department honored its own and city officials Thursday night at the department's first awards banquet held at the Seven-Eleven Seven-Eleven Cafe, 77 East Main St. A total of 22 awards were presented in areas of education, marksmanship, service ser-vice and achievement. Detective Cpl. Paul Parker received the Chief's award from Robert Downard for his overall outstanding service to the department during the past year. Sgt. Dave Free was honored as the department's outstanding shooter with an award presented by Uintah County Sheriff Arden Stewart. He scored 2,958 points out of a possible 3,000 during the department's in-service training. Downard presented a citizen's award to former Vernal City councilman Gene Anfinson, who served as public safety councilman from 1977 to 1981. A standing stan-ding ovation was given for Anfinson, whom Downard credited for the department's depart-ment's increased efficiency and equipment equip-ment capability. Detective Sgt. Darrel Lance was honored for his nearly 12 years of service. ser-vice. City Attorney David Burningham, who will be leaving the post next month to return to law school, received a citizen's certificate of achievement.
