I I ls r JI 1 l' l I r r t I J Ii dI if YOUTH CONSERVATION Corp summer program program pro pro- gram will be staffed by the following front row left to right Herb Cathy Rutherford H a Cole Back row left to right Gary Pilar Pilar- ski Pat Minx and David Drobac program begins at Ouray uray Wildlife Refuge This Monday June 19 twenty local begin participating in the Youth Conservation Corps summer program at Ouray National Wildlife Refuge The group consists of ten girls and ten boys from this area including Marilee Allred Mired Beverly Buchanan Todd Chapman Lori Ann Cuch George Ignacio Roger Ivie Ivle Shane Jenks Ladonna Kidd Becky Long John Maaz Mark Mott Penny Peterson Max Wade Stevens Carol Stewart Mike Stewart Mindy Stewart Eric Swenson and Lisa Young The purpose of the Program is three fold The first is to provide meaningful employment to Americas America's youth aged 18 15 in a healthy outdoor atmosphere The second is to accomplish accomplish accomplish ac ac- needed conservation work on public lands The third objective is to provide an opportunity for youth to better understand and appreciate the natural environment The will be involved in innumerous innumerous innumerous numerous work projects including fencing painting building bridges planting trees constructing small buildings etc Along with the work projects the crews will be involved in a rather extensive environmental A awareness and outdoor education program is a conservation work program and certainly not the typical summer camp experience that is entirely entirely entirely en en- recreation oriented Recreation will be a part of the program during off hours however at spike camps which will be located at Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge and Jones Hole National Fish Hat Hat- chery At these places the willbe will willbe willbe be camping and working for one to two weeks at a time There are five people on the staff this year The Director is Autumn Cole who has an MA M.A. in Human Relations She has worked with young people as a youth center counselor as staff on a travel camp and most recently as a therapist-assistant therapist director at an Alternative Mental Health program in Colorado Outdoor activities are one of her special in In- In David Drobac last years year's Camp Director is the Environmental Awareness Coordinator and Assistant Director He has worked one year with in Minnesota two years with a youth travel camp in the Western US U.S. and has an MA M.A. in Environmental Education Lew Littleton a longtime resident of this area works for the refuge on a permanent basis and will bethe be bethe bethe the work coordinator for this summer He will be responsible for planning organizing and overseeing the work projects Cathy Rutherford one of the Work Crew Leaders recently her Bachelor of Education from the the University of Northern Colorado She was involved in wilderness trips for youth with a YMCA camp near Granby Colorado last summer Her Iler main interests center around kids and the outdoors Gary a Work Crew Leader received his BS in Wildlife Biology from Michigan State University He lie specialized in waterfowl and aquatic systems and his main in interests are backpacking and outdoor survival techniques techniques' Our Our other Work Crew rew Leader Pat Minx graduated from the Univ University of Missouri with a BS in Forestry Fisheries and Wildlife His area concentration was reptiles and amphibians He also enjoys canoeing and hiking Department of the Interior is the host agency for the Ouray Herb Refuge Manager will be the supervisor This unique summer experience will last for eight weeks during which both employees and staff expect to share a avery avery avery very meaningful experience |
