| Show Alternate school choo concept I IU I A TT U discussed by school board The Uintah School District Board of Education is investigating the possibilities of creating an alternative school to set off-set the high number of high school drop outs and low Average Daily Attendance that determines the amount of state monies allocated to the district A survey conducted earlier in the year by district staff was presented to the board by Superintendent L. L Wayne Reid that identified students will go goon goon goon on to college vocational school or some type of business school while students will terminate their formal education by gaining employment or going into the armed forces The report also indicated 99 students will get married While figuring in a 40 per cent error ratio 60 per cent or students are determined to not having their needs met by the present educational system With an alternative school situation a non-college non bound student can have his hisor hisor hisor or her program altered or styled to meet the individuals individual's needs Giving to the need of an alternative school system was provided by Winslow Weber Uintah High School Vice Principal Weber in a presentation presentation presen presen- tation before the board identified four juniors presently attending classes who will be unable to graduate from high school with their graduating class unless they receive additional credits outside their normal class loads Weber also stated to the board more than 65 sophomores have failed at least one class in the first three quarters of Continued on Page 16 Alternate school Continued from Page 1 the 78 1977 school year Of those four will be unable to graduate without gaining credit from outside their normal class loads during the next two years The most startling fact mentioned mentioned men men- by Weber alerted the school board to thirty nine students beginning their sophomore year last September at Uintah High School who have dropped school for various reasons Weber pointed out however fifteen of oC those drop outs have since enrolled in an alternative program and are progressing well The interest in the alternative school idea requested the administration to undertake a thorough review of the concept and make recommendations to the board at a later meeting In other board action The possibilities of a Fundamental School being created in the Uintah School District and the Fund Fundamental mental School philosophy were discussed by bythe bythe bythe the board following a presentation by Dan Good West Junior High Principal The school board felt many of the concepts within a Fundamental School system could be implemented in the district however too many problems associated with its creation in the district at this time prohibits any move toward complete acceptance The Early Retirement Policy Amendment was approved by the board The policy states eligibility and minimum years of service may be reviewed by the Board of Education The policy gives the power to the board to waive the eligibility and minimum years of oC service required for retirement if the board feels special circumstances exist Approval w was s given to requests by Naples Elementary for a trip to Harpers Harper's Harpers Harper's Har liar pers per's Corner and by the Vernal Junior Student Council and Honor Society for fora a trip to Lagoon on May 13 Approval was also given to Dr Colleen Coltons Colton's request of oC for tuition to a Mid Eastern school in Cairo Egypt to be held this trus summer following the end of oC her contract year assignments as a regional She advised members to not waste time on unimportant things to pattern their lives after the Savior and find inner peace and happiness from living Jiving the gospel Mrs Franklin I D. D Richards urged everyone to follow the truths from the standard works and the handbooks She told the members to be obedient and willing to sacrifice Elder expressed appreciation for forthe forthe forthe the dedicated service of President and pledged his support to the new presidency He Ile urged all church members to put forth great effort to help into service those who are inac Inac- tive The concluding speaker was President President dent Richards who expressed love and greetings to the stake from Prophet and President Spencer W. W Kimball lie He also expressed his appreciation for the music and said the song of the righteous was a prayer unto God He lie advised the members to follow the leaders of the church and never turn down an opportunity opportunity opportunity to serve The Relief Society Chorus sang Still Still Within and the benediction wa was offered by Robert Turner Prelude and postlude music was played by Eleanor Marshall |
