| Show S L f ilk STUDENTS OF MAESER grade pledge Ill Never Start Smoking is increasing in the United States say authorities and so is cancer Maeser students pledge Ill III never start five Eighty fifth grade students from Maeser Macer Elementary School are charter charier members of INS the new Ill Never Start II program This group sponsored by the American Cancer Society is designed to lo make students more aware of the hazards of smoking by asking them to sign a pledge that they will never start smoking The pilot project was begun in Murray elementary schools by the Utah Ulah Division and will not be in full swing until next fall But Bui at al the request of Doris Morrill a teacher at al Maeser students here were permitted to join ON MARCH 15 as part parl of a health education program sponsored by the Uintah Unit of ACS Marie Godfrey Uintah Unit President gave a program on the values of not smoking The program included a discussion of the characteristics of smokers why smokers tell children to never start smoking and the health health problems associated with smoking After viewing a film Smoking Past and Present students were given the chance to ask their own questions Students were then told about INS The next day teachers Doris Morrill Kathy Fraser and Harry Terry again described INS and asked students if they chose to sign pledges that they would never start smoking Almost all students of the fifth grade agreed and received buttons Identifying them as members of INS The remainder of the program includes includes in in- eludes posters comic books and other special activities including an opportunity opportunity op op- to use the smoking machine which demonstrates the effects of tar and nicotine on the lungs Will such a commitment in fifth I grade keep these students from smoking Well just have hav to lo wait walt and see says Mrs Godfrey who is storing the pledges away for a comparison study about five years from now |
