Show IN THE POST OFFICE department the washington norg on cc respondent correspondent of the philadelphia north t amon american 1 I in a recent 1 letter to that journal says the redactions reductions in in the mail se beuce lee over the country which the postmaster general genera has power to make maio under a provision in all contracts except that for tb the e 01 overland erland rout router efrom rom which it was strangely excluded though involving a gros expenditure of exclusive of interest are clearly completed and ill the figures will vi ill be brou brought ht together this month so BO that the public may understand what has been accomplished the work has gone on quietly but effectually without discrimination in favor of any section or interest b but ut in pursuance of an equitable system established by mr holt for the double purpose of conforming to a present necessity a and nd or of correcting a loose and extravagant expenditure which his predecessor had bad en encouraged outraged ou raged though some of the accustomed mail facilities many of which had been unduly enlarged have been curta curtailed lied no serious complaint has bas been made that the public interests 11 have ave suffered and the contractors and others from whom most clamor was anticipated have submitted uncomplainingly to the duty imposed upon the department to perform this irksome task without an outburst of indignation required tact resolution and a clear comprehension of all the complications the postmaster general and the assistant upon nhom the practical execution of this duty devolved have cause of congratulation in a success which was by no no means eans expected in any quarter not even i in the department itself this re retrenchment may cover a couple of millions and mr holt will then submit the question distinctly to congress whether the orvic service shall be conducted on such a basis as h be shall propose or be dependent up upon regular or capricious legislation hereafter bem fler |
