Show RECORD CROWDS ATTEND M 1 JUBILEE MEET parade largest in history of the tha intermountain inter mountain west salt lake city the eyes ot of many thousands of people in utah and the surrounding states reaching as far north as canada and as far south as aa arizona and mexico are now turned towards salt lake city and many have attended the great mutual improvement pro conference and jubilee held from juno june oth ath to june letb tho the jubilee brought to salt lake city one of the greatest gatherings 0 of young people ever assembled in the intermountain inter mountain country representatives e senta tives gathered from idaho wyoming om ing arizona nevada oregon colorado and canada took part in this great E roat celebration it was fifty years ago on an the of june 1875 in the thirteenth ward in salt lake city that the young mens alens mutual improvement association was organized by junius P F wells under the direction of prest dent brigham young A few years previous to that a n young organization had been started which afterwards became the young ladles mutual improvement association these organizations together now have over members it was the annual june conference of these great associations that occasioned the jubilee celebration of tills this fiftieth anniversary over guests in salt lake in addition to the tha local citizens witnessed some of the features of the occasion starts with reception A reception tor for all the delegates was glyen given in honor of the first presidency of tho the church it was necessary to utilize three largo large buildings tor for this reception it was carried on simultaneously in the church office building this being the tha first function of tills this kind ever heia bold in the building the deseret gymnasium and the odeon hall were used in addition over three thousand people were at the reception during the three days very important general and departmental meetings ings were conducted in which vital mutual improvement problems were discuss d this organization was i under the direction of exper expert t leaders and afforded an unusual opportunity tor for mutual improvement workers one feature of the jubilee was a grand pageant the torch of inspire atlon given in the great tabernacle for this special occasion a great c cy Y cl lorama orama or stage draping was used for the first time extending across tho the entire end of this historic building affording a stage setting and background back ground for the pageant the principal feature on the stage was waa a greek temple around which was depicted the development of mutual lin provement pro work past present future the cyclorama Is necessarily of great dimensions consisting of a complete set of beautiful velour curtains which will form a valuable pud permanent equipment tor for such similar events as nay be in tho the future presented in the tabernacle over seven hundred people took part in tho pageant atcho the betag was mounted a great torch significant ct c t the theme treated music contest another special feature of the ju bilee was wag a grand concert in the tab or oreacle nacle orn aclo which brought together tho the winners of the al I 1 A contests tho the male choruses the tha ladles ladies choruses and the bands these presented their winning numbers there was also an ensemble including 22 contesting male choruses and one of 42 contesting ladles choruses and a great ensemble of ag brass bands which rendered special numbers on wednesday wednesdays Wednes dayi june at 11 I 1 started from the head ot of main street the greatest parade over produced in the intermountain inter mountain states more than ten thousand people reported tor for participation in this great event it consisted of fourteen divi eglons glons under the direction of former governor charles R mabey as grand I 1 marshall arshall A with one hundred selected aides the procession marched mir ched down main street to ath south thence back on main alain street to 2nd and south thence fast east to state street north to south temple and then passed the rev reviewing dewing stand in front of the church office building this great event was called the the parade of the he banners for there were hun of beautiful banners carried in more than one hundred units of parade by representatives of over associations having a total membership of more than at the lead head of these banners a magnificent banner of silk and gold perhaps the tha finest banner over seen in this locality was carried in the various divisions were eleven specially prepa prepared reI flo floats ats representing the studies and activities of tho the association religion history science music literature recreation fabb fathers ers and sons outing mothers and daughters day and three pageant floats past present and future |
