Show make go good od silage from different legume cropf some soine farmers have reported excellent results lit in making silage from alfalfa clover and other legumes while others report that their legume silage was so poor tile the cows cowa would not eat it tho the great extremes lit in the results re potted as to the palatability of legume 1 silage led professor eckles to investigate this question lie ile found alint the difference in quality was apparently patently ly due to the amount of water in these legumes when ensiled enfiled ensi led for two years they had made good alfalfa silage at the missouri station but the next two years the silage was practically worthless in going over this experience per peri ence lence it was noted that the first two years yeara were dry years and the analysis of tile the alfalfa when enfiled ensiled showed a high percentage of dry matter the next two years were wet years and tile the analysis those years yeara showed that the dry matter content centt nt was considerably less at the time the green alfalfa was enfiled ensiled ensi led further investigations showed that ir alfalfa were made bunde into when green ond and succulent as it Is at the usual time ehni ot of making hay it contains about 20 pounds of dry matter to the hundred bundred and under tinder these conditions would not make good silage if it were drier and more mature and contained approximately 40 pounds of dry matter to the hundred then it makes good silage |
