Show SURVIVOR RELATES STORY OF IN MID OCEAN tells of the terrible scene aboard ship wrapped in flames cowardly crew added to panic london A graphic story atory by the solitary survivor aboard the carman la was received by wireless and proa prea sent santa a terrible picture of the horror herror the panic and confusion aboard tho the burning liner walter it a german who tells the story how ever Is a clearly suffering from the stress of illness and awful experiences and his story atory Is too incoherent to bo be accepted in every detail all went well sald until 6 thursday morning when the fire alarm sounded wo we wore aroused and told to go on deck as fero had broken out la in the hold on assembling life belts were handed around and much time was occupied in fastening them we were told that the firo fire might soon be quenched but tho the captain thought it wise for all to have belts as a precaution the fire frightened tho the captain who cried bitterly thero there were many babies lii in arms tho the fire grew worse we saw things blazing down below about 10 there was a cry to lower the boats the captain behaved splendidly so did the officers who were english I 1 am sorry to say that thai the crow crew who are germans and belgians behaved ary very badly I 1 the people rushed about wildly and the crow crew seemed to think they ought to have first place instead of quieting the passengers they made the panic worse the first officer took charge of the ali first st boat but although ho be wanted the women and aildred saved first a majority of those who entered the boat were wera members of the crow crew this boat was smashed against tho the ships side just as it reached tho the water it broke in fit two and all a 9 ll 11 were drowned attempts were made to lower the second boat I 1 cannot say who was in chargo of oe this but I 1 do know that after tho the chief steward had thrown provisions in lie ho jumped in himself there were more men than women and children in this boat which was broken against tho the ship all were drowned these two boats were amidships three others were put aft the fourth officer was waa la in one of them but I 1 cannot say which one all was contusion confusion tile the ropes broke and tho the people were thrown into the water and drowned or killed |
