Show record of tests of dairy cows twelve farmers and dairymen have been cooperating with the i county agent in keeping daily records of the production and feed of their cows during tile the past year over co coni cawi ni have been on these records and many surprises to carmera far m ers have been made this work was done not because butter fat prices were encouraging at all to fa banners in this county but because only a very few of the farmers are able to got get grazing permits on the public ranges for stiff sufficient lelent number of head to justify ranging beef cattle for this reason all their stock must bo be fed the year round on the farar and as a consequence less live stock can be kept and the feed is much higher under these conditions farmers cannot afford to raise beef cattle alone they ahey must have stock that yields B v dougle pro dudon in order to receive a profit for their work and feed consumed this is IF demon demonstrated strafe d by tile the tact fact probably n ty per cent of the lh fa farmers r rn e rs of der settlement are milking g a small herd of cows this work was done to demonstrate to these farmers an accurate and practical way of determining the t jow and to enable them to eliminate tho the j poor prudice producers rs and thus grade up their herds abb farmers cooperating kept their own records and took the milo milk samples to be tested all under the direction of the counti agai t tile the agent collected these samples onen a month and badt anad babock babcock fat tests of the individual cows lie he also kept a summary of all records at the end of tile the year summaries a and nd pvc ive averages rages were compiled f from rom records so BO that comparison could be made of the individual cos coms and of herds two compiled summary records wern were made one is of the average of tho the years work of ind individual vidual cows including tile the following factors for each herd fiord breal of cow age average lbs ibs milland mill and fat per month average test value of skimmed milk at per cwt cat for hog f feed e jd avedge price paid for butter fat by creameries crea meries buying in thie section which was average cost of feed per month number of months on test actual lactation period profit per month andl and per ten months in kept up average af after ter feed had been subtracted ide other is a comparison part I 1 son is ia by herds of the average production as fol follows lovs used to make the above comparisons looking across the bottom row in the above table giving the profit for ten months we notice that the 10 per cent of best cows save gave a profit of nearly twice as much as th tha average of all the 79 cows and over five times as much as tile the average of the ton ten per cent of poorest cows too many are of the poorest class claas but wo we will take tile the aver ago of all tho the cows and tile tho average of the ten per cent ot ol best cows for comparison it I 1 i i F probably fair to value tile the first at 50 per head and tho the second it at per head the last in actual value profit would woula be worth more than tace tw co as much and would sell easier for that price for convenience wo we will call the two classes as 80 and 40 cows after one gets the foundation stock ir does not cost ana an more to raise tile tho 80 cows it does to raise tile the 40 cows one half ai many of the first will produce as much profit as E twice as many of the second tho te best does not ent eat any more than one of the poor cows requires only half the work and stable room and from tile the standpoint of raising them the chanca chanat of loss is only half as great because one only needs half as wa to make the same profit say nothing about the iz reater interest in working ditl good tock stock if a assuming that 1 like I ke belet begets like as aa breeders bleeders bre eders do he 80 cows heifer is worth twice as much as the helfer heifer ol 01 the 40 cow then from froin tin standpoint of her double production and economy she is mon than two hundred per cent more efficient than the average cow some will say that the steer calves of the best cows are not as valuable as they may bo be of 0 tile the average cows but 0 out ut of tile the 8 host cows three were large short horn cows two registered jar jemers levs and three grade jerseys in this tin s county where butter fat is so BO low in price it may b that the short horn cows of the right kind are the mot profitable but one thing is sure that thai cowa kept on the farm must produce more than a calf and that good dairy cows of the 80 class will produce an equivalent of five ave good calves at 20 per head it must also be understood that the dairy cow furnishes profitable employment for the farm ors ers family luring during the winter season when there is not much other work she also brings bring a steady and regular income and keeps the soil fertility on oil tile the farm which means to the farmer klipst average poorest
