Show journalism how hi mw york journal obtained its inaugural report the wonderful results achieved by modern scientific ifill aid artists photographers stenographers era and reporters work during a wild ride eida A mile in thirty four seconds upon the day that william me kinley was inaugurated president of the united stales the journal s special train which brought pictures and photographs of the scenes in in washington to new york established H bell this re record ord between philadelphia and trenton and while the train was running nin at this tremendous speed a p photographer I 1 eapher was developing his plates six ai lists were at work upon their sketches a was taking pictures of the receding tracks track at the rate of forty a second a reporter was talking into a phonograph and two typewriters were clicking away as merrily as though it all were happening in a quiet room in one of the skyscraping sky scraping office buildings of new york was it not a wonderful achievement could anything illustrate more strikingly the resources reso arces of modern science ll 11 1 I 1 T arfe journal on friday 1 1 toldia told tol dio in afef ji v har in W y if ii d e d b d ti bl ton and jerre jersey y city was made in exactly minutes the fastest time ever inadi over this road the record was broken and tile the journal tuond its triumph two desirable and interesting achievements but the trip deserves more than a brief record of its time it broke more records than that of railroad trains train s it did more than add to the glory of the journal it dij did these things it proved that the principle of the could be adapted to photograph accurately any animated scene arid and preserve it forever lt it proved that the phonograph could become as useful and as handy bandy an implement as a pen or pencil it proved that a new kew york newspaper could extend the he beope of its illustrations of daily events hundreds of miles it annihilated time arid and distarce distance it pointed out the possibilities of rapid transit it set nn an example for the future and above all it proved that where there s a will theres a way taking it all in all it was as excellent and nd as rapid a bit of newspaper work as has ever been recorded the railroad officials were rather skeptical of its in in the beginning but enthusiasm is contagious ald and before the train reached lersey city evera every em aloye of the pennsylvania railroad company both high and low was working 7 for dear life to help that train b reak break the record when mr cleveland arid and sir mr mckinley left tho 1 hite house to rido ride to the capitol they had bad to pass under the win clims of the courtial B s washinton washington ton bureau here an artist a photographer and the were in waiting wai for them fortunately the carriage car riago came 1 to a momentary stop directly in front of this spot and the photographer anti and aigist had an excellent opportunity of joins doing its work the meanwhile le was taking pictures pic turea of mr mckinley SIc Kinley bowing to right and to left then the carriage passed on toward the capitol tire tho photographer and mr L H edson dison raff kilo who was in charge of tho immediately packed their instruments into a carriage image and drove to tho the railroad elation where the special train was in waiting wailing here the photographer proceeded to erect in a corner of the ille day coach a small dark room in which to develop his plates the man loaded ilia his instrument with a supply of fresh plates for new pictures one after one the artists who biad waited to sketch the various scenes of the ceremony or of inauguration arrived at the station half an hour after mckinley McKi uley had taken the oath of office the artist who saw raw him do it ilas as sitting in an arm chair on the special train drawing awing lr his picture twenty minutes after mckinley now president of the united states had bad started for the white louse the artist who had waited to see what body of troop would escort him vas busily occupied in drawing horses and soldiers eis and so 0 from various quarters quarter the journals staff arrived until all tire the most import ant features of the cerenio ceremony ny had been ae accounted counted for then alie train started for new york there was a delay of twelve minutes in the yard to enable mr rail to take vita pictures of the train with its decorations and flags flaga in a faw week thee pictures will be on exhibition in almost every big city in the country when men these pictures had bad been taken the engineer pulled his cap down over his bis eyes and settled down to serious business the railroad officials had given the journals hyer flyer a clear road dozen s of local passenger trains had bad been sidetracked all along the line from NV washington ashington to philadelphia past fast these trains the special flew like a streak of light two cars make an extremely light load for a ichord breaking run and the passengers frequently felt as if they were sailing through gil the air the train seemed actually to bound footit the tracks and leap forward without touching the rails for many yaris at a jump this portion of the run was rather agrava aggravating gradating ting on account of vario various u s delays for instance the tha city of wilmington was reached at 05 p m bill bat fully aix iv minutes were con slimed in in passing through the yards there on account of a jam of freight cars if these six minutes wei woe e to lie ie deducted from the actual running time and what ahat record breaker would hesitate to deduct it a record would ho be established that would probably stand lor many to come on this run from wa leigton ton to philadelphia I 1 sat in a soft arm aim chair in the pallor pailor car and found record breaking to be an extremely agreeable pastime the artists nu hugly ly settled in similar cozy hairs chairs were working on their sketches as unconcernedly as though they the were in their rooms at home A reporter who had spent the morning in keeping track of mr McKin leya leys doings was reciting his hia tale into the willing ear of a phonograph the cylinder of which was to be turned on oer er to a ty typewriter pe as soon as the train reached new york A typewriter who was on oil board the train held his ear as close to me as the swaying of the train would permit while I 1 shouted at him the story of how bow we were breaking the record mile after mile click click click rattled the typewriter bur r r r r droned dronek the phonograph whenever the door of the dark carlt room opened the A hole bole car was permeated aled with the odor jor of the photographer s studio several men were writing and the ai were Fc scraping raping awry for dear life and all this w v hile bile mind you th the train etrain was whirling al along adonat 0 at the rate of seventy miles an hour yet EO smooth was tire the track and so 60 firm the roadbed that as I 1 have taid laid I 1 found record breakie breaking to be a rather agreeable way of spending til all afternoon the train plunged into a tunnel and nd for a moment the car was in dark darkness the next neit instant how exer eer the interior of the car was illuminated by bv a bright flash of light and a myriad of sparks aastad by the windows through tho the front of the car I 1 could see the glare of the furnace reflected upon the roof of the tunnel the smokestack seemed to 10 have become the crater of an active volcano showers of heavy sparks with intermit tant flashes of flame darted upward to the tunnel roof loof and illumined the whole interior of the train once or twice I 1 beheld the sil houtte of 0 the fireman against ri this bright background and this it was that aroused in rne mo the curiosity to know what a record breakie breaking g trip teemed seemed like to the men in abeen the engine ine a curiosity that I 1 may as well eay right here was satisfied for all time to come at ph philadelphia ilia where the train stopped fort for three bree minutes 1 I climbed into nto the rab of the engine the engineer knew that lie hu was lias to break the record to jersey city if he be and I 1 promised min him glory and reward if he be would mako make the run of 00 miles in less than SO 80 minutes 1 I can do it he be said the next moment I 1 was regretting it with a snort and a bound the engine seemed to leap clear of the tr track ack she he dashed through the yards as though she were beyond control hundreds Hundred Hun dredd of tracks gleamed and hashed flashed in every direction tapi yard seemed to be honeycombed with switches I 1 freight cars care were scattered everywhere loose rails were piled alongside the tracks in countless countless heaps everything in these lm immense yards seemed to be out of place and in utter disorder and through this confusion we va wre pre flying at the rate of a mile a minute so abru abrupt t were the curves and so nit numerous in erac u 1 the swit switches cLes over winch which we jolted that I 1 had to hold fact to the window of the cab with both arms I 1 looked at the engineer expecting to nod find him bewildered wil ivil dered by excitement to my creat aroa ement he ha appeared to be perfectly calm lie ile nodded to me and shouted until he was waa red in the face but I 1 couldn coulden t catch a word of it with one tremendous jo jolt it the engine cleared the yard and pointed her nose down a straight track that stretched ahead as far as the eye could see the en engineer gincer made a signal to the fir fireman eulan who in mediately lie liean began an to pile in collaud coa laud with every shovel fill of coal that was thrown into the furnace the speed seemed to increate increase with a jerk now began a furious ride the engine swayed and rocked from oni tide side to side until 1 I in my to terror actually felt her toppling over slid and crash crashing inq on oil her side night i had bad set get in and in the gathering dark nets nebs the trees and towns all seemed to melt into one ray gray cloud through which we re bad been shot from a cannons mouth the fireman approached roe me and yelled in my ear I 1 could barly catch the words take her time limo at the next mile post I 1 saw the white post flash by and mechanically 1 I pressed the spring of my altop watch in a tn tw inkling another mile post flashed by and by a pressure of the finger I 1 stopped the watch I 1 giuld uld not lot take my eyes off that vista of track rack and trees down which we were nero hying the engine was roaring and gr groaning fanin and bound bounding hig and rocking rockina sep gc min ay beyond control and my mind was in a very condition I 1 was looking for broken rails and open foft itches with the conviction that in less than a second after I 1 saw orle one I 1 would bo be crushed out of all semblance oca to a human being no earthly power could have stopped that train had an ob st truc ruction tion loomed into view tire the slightest accident any bing from a sudden widening of the tracks to anrce a tree falling across the rails would have bave meant destruction the fireman vias s as working like a denion demon E each ach time the furnace door BIN swung 1113 oven open the glare of the fire shed a ghastly light upon his face I 1 remember that as if it were part of a nightmare ile he seemed to fit into a dream and the engineer fitted into it and the darkness of the roar ing and rocking and bounding of that mighty berj ine all seemed to be part 0 of it and it seemed truly like a hor horrible libl dream all except the conscious conleious ness that I 1 was wa hol holdine dide fast for dear life and peering into nes neej 3 ahead abea J wondering in what form the wre wreck c k would conic come how it happened that the train was not wrecked I 1 do not clearly cle clearly irly understand dut cut strad strange 0 O to relate the track did not widen and there was no open switch witch and no rail or tree fell across i the lie track in fact the rails were true and the engines boiler did not burst buist and the fireman was not an ling coal into a compartment of but an exceedingly good natured young fellow who when the train settled down to a normal gait came of out tho the dream and asked mo me to look at my watch did she mako make th that at mile in thirty seconds shouted the engineer the fireman opened d the door of the furnace so that I 1 could see the face of the watch I 1 shook my head no 1 I replied it took thirty four seconds the engineer was disappointed when we reached jer ey city they had bad to lift rne me from the cab HAKKY |
