A explosion in one of the chamber of the Sunshine coal mice, the property of the Colorado Fuel and Iron company at Sun shine; some sixteen miles southeast of G Urn wood Springs, killed eleven Italians and one American tonight a few minutes before 6 oclock. The men were preparing to leave tbe mine on the day shift when the disaster ' occurred. A shot had been fired, and instead of it being a direct explosion, it was what iu miners parlance is called a blowout; that is, the powder created a fiame which shot " backward and caught tbe dust that had accumulated in' the chamber, instead of dislodging the peam of coal intended. At the time of the , explosion there was a barrel of gunpowder in the chamber which ignited and aided the dissster which would have occurred through the coal-dus- t The explosion alone. Sunshine, where the disaster occurred, is a peculiar coal, a combination of anthracite and bitumen, and there is a belief that the gathering of the coal dust in the chamber of the mine was due to an excessive explosion caused by a desire to empty the chamber too quickly.'. In the whole property there are men employed. fifty to fifty-fiv- e The tingle chamber where the men were killed was the only ono damaged. Two hours after the explosion occurred the bodies of the dead men were all brought to the surGlen wood, Colo., coal-dus- t effects of stomach worms.
