composition a certain amount of preparatory work should be done by the instructor in order to make the study both interesting and intelligible to the student I 1 have known pupils to come into a class prepared to study a piece of literature without h having v the remotest idea of who wrote it As such a student always works at a disadvantage the instructors first care should be to make hi his s class acquainted with the author this is best accomplished by his bis giving a short sketch of the authors life making it as interesting as poss possible ible dwelling on the striking incidents ants of his career and giving givin g some idea of the surroundings and circumstances that he helped ped to tc evolve the writer how much better we can appreciate preci ate the genius of shakespeare if we know the man if we have known him as a boy playing in the lovely warn ick shire lanes or with his bis satchel and shining morning face creeping unwilling to his bis latin lessons in the stratford grammar school it we have known him as a youth walking across the fields to shottery Sh ottery to court anne hathaway or as a young man seeking his fortune laying its foundations by holding horses horses outside a london theatre with how much more sympathy and reverence can we approach the majestic thoughts of milton if we nye have known him old blind and neglected painfully brit ging forth the
