wherefore his article should be read by anti I 1 in a commonwealth such as this in which the firmament of intellectual greatness is resplendent with a galaxy of stars whose bright brightness nesE is not excelled in any other state it is su an easy matter to name a list of men whose ability and intelligence would compare favorably with the greatest minds of the present age aae in any land and particularly ticul arly pasy easy is ia it to choose from among them all a few whose mental brilliancy is surpassing bright not as the fl flashing ablaing firey comet which streams gercs the firma ments expanse but as the grand immovable star light abdine on tho the steadier and brighter because of the very darkness through which it tends its rays it is therefore opportune at such a time as this when a great people are called upon to select through their accredited representatives in the state 0 legislature a man who shall serve them in that au august arsema y the senate of the nation to present for their consideration and favorable action one whose genius and intelligence equal the brightest in illustrious galaxy that one is none other than the hon hell moses thatcher of logan for more than a quarter of a century he has been one of the most beloved of men his intellectuality has raised the standard of literary excellence cel lence throughout the intermountain wet we t his matchless oratory has thrilled the souls soula of thousands of our sons and daugh his labors in behalf of wor aliby religion and humanity generally have been an inspiration and guide towards all that is highest and best beat in every walk of life and his whole carter career has been a testimonial to his own superior manhood in religion in business in politics and in friendships realm possessing a parr farr sir mr thatcher shortly after his hia marriage settled in cache valley and built the first frame house in logan ever since thit that time his career hasteen been one of the greatest activity much of his life has been spent in behalf of the people of utah both epi spiritually ritually end and temporally po rally ever since his icah year up to the time of president you ogia death he was treated by the great gnat at leader with the af affection all a father would eve give to it x son eon president young recognized in him the splendid qualities which eie being continually developed by study and opportunities and which have resulted in his recognition as one of the brightest and i bleat of our citizens for years he be was selected as the chief representative of the mormon church in mexican affairs and his remarkable tact and dip diplomacy louia cy were largely instrumental in recur ing for his people the advantages and immunities they now enjoy in in the southern republic dut but it ft is unnecessary to enter into detail in reference to mr thatchers business and religious record the great mass of the people of utah are familiar with it too to a greater or less e se degree de ree and it would therefore be a work of supererogation to discuss it further the present situation bitu alion of political affairs makes of more pertinent interest his bia political career it maybe may be said that in no sense has mr thatcher been an office seeker ile he is no politician ican in the ordinary dense of the term ile he served cache and rich counties ten years in the territorial legislative council and was an active member of the constitutional conventions of 1872 and 1895 ile he has aleo been a member of numerous rum erous conventions and congresses ot of various kinds and his rare rare ability and magnetic personality have always brought brou t his work into striking ing preeminence pre eminence mr thatcher Thatch pr has always been a democrat politically caily as utah was waa politically and religiously free and it now more than ever behooves the people of utah to show that that edict was and ever must be maintained in honesty few men in the state if any are better equipped for the service likely to be imposed upon him As a business man his investments have one time or another covered nearly all branches of industry in utah mining mercantile bank banking in railroading railroading cattle raising farming cereal milling manufacturing in fact the whole who le range ran 0 ge has been compassed by his energy consequently every material interest in the state would find in him a ready and understanding friend while in that wider field which the legislation of the present makes for the expectancy of the future and meets the dangers that afar off
