saints reminded minded Ee of their daty to silver hadged Had Geo Q cannon been sent to the 1 enato enate S instead of off F J the can party bould not now feel ael humiliated by the acts of one whom it had bad thrice honored the above item from our local contemporary conveys the siou that via the republican party part is suffering great humiliation because of the conduct of senator frank J cannon whom it has thrice honored it also intimates that geo gen Q cannon would have taken a different course from that taken by frank we don t know what authority our neighbor has for making such an all assertion or for defini defining Dg the political status of lion hon geo Q cannon or what reason it lias h as in tr trying bryin yin 0 to create the impression that he is a mckinley man mail but we do know that in the file juvenile instructor for this its editor geo Q cannon defines silver as the money of the constitution and that he appeals to the mormon people to uphold upheld the cona ution and resent the attacks made thereon by the goldbug gold ol bug db party here is mr cannons article in full 7 ri tories TOPICS or OF TIM THE TIMES it is 13 not mt the province of the juvenile instructor to take any part in politics and the editor has scrupulously refrained from arfat treating upon political questions od afi any character only as those questions ions affected us as latter day saints we cannot as a people however close our eyes or our ears cars to lo that which is going on around us xo no people 0 on n this contin continent crit are more interested in public movements than are the members of the church of jebus christ of latter day saints so many predictions have leen been made concerning the future of our own nation that we would bo be a very very stupid people if we were not deeply interested in the fulfillment of those predictions and in watch ing the signs which will precede or accompany them tile the boot of mormon is a roost most precious record if for no other reason than this it gives us a 1 clear idea concerning 0 the fate of the people of this land in their national capacity not only does the book of mormon furnish us with the most interesting and definite 1 information 12 but the book of doctrine and covenants also can be read by latter day saints with the deepest interest because or of the events which are arc foreshadowed foreshadower fore shadowed in the revelations which it contains the lord has told us that this nation was raised up expressly by him the founders of it were in in the work which they performed the armies of the revolution were sustained by his power and achieved their victory over the armies of the mother country through his blessing A form of government was established which would permit the organization of the church of christ and would grant to that church the fullest liberty of worship consistent with good order no human being could properly ask for greater liberty than every man under this government can possess where the constitution is maintained tile the lord undoubtedly has this in view in in breaking the yoke of the mother country and in making free the colonies which afterwards became the united states slates great promises were made unto the people of this land if they would obey the lord and would beek to work righteousness in the land but the people were warned that great di disasters tasters and trouble and calamity would fall upon them unless they took this course corn tie it if they rebelled against god and refused to acknowledge him they should bo be 0 overthrown gerthro wn in connection with these predictions other predictions prediction were made as to the future of the church of christ and the influence which that church would have in this land tho the prophet joseph and other elders predicted that i ahe he day would come coine when nhen constitutional government in this cout country itry would be endangered and when it would require the interference of the people of god to uphold the hit constitution and the liberties that are au guaranteed granteed aran teed under it so eu that all the inhabitants of the land should enjoy the rights which belong to then them as free men and as citizens of the republic from early lays days predictions of this character have beer been made it hus bas been the settled belief of the best informed members of the church that it was the destiny ot of the latter day saints tn in the not distant future to uphold upheld the constitution and be the saviors of liberty on this land certainly no people between the two oceans on this continent are so well qualified by training 0 by experience and by their general characteristics to petford pel form this work are the people called mor mons who inhabit these mountains to my mind the admi admission stion of utah as a state was a step necessary to put us in a position n lo 10 0 o perform this vi ork numbers of people thought utah never would be admitted bitted d as a state but to me it seemed absolutely necessary that the territory should lecome 1 acome a state to give us the standing necessary nee s ea ry to perform the work which lay before us As h a state we are clothed with all the powers of sovereignty P we have a voice in all the councils of the nation and in ill the election of a president and a vice president jent and though num eri cally weak compared with such a state stale as new york our voice is as potential in many ciany directions as that of the empire state this being the condition we have grand opportunities to demonstrate to the people of this great nation unselfish love for constitutional principles and american institutions and it can be truthfully said that even today utah has an importance in the eyes of men that very many larger states do not have Is there not something very significant ant in utah ha having edg attained to the full di dignity of a state just on the verge of the present widespread a agitation citation of very cry important questions and the threatening aspect of public affairs throughout the entire republic it is no exaggeration to say that eliat the united states stales never occupied a more critical position anle unless s we accept the eve of the cai civil ia war than at present in fact there ale aie those in the nation who assert that the present situation is equally critical with that which preceded the war the intensity of feeling which has grown up on the gold and silver question has no parallel excepting that which t grew up bet between slavery and freedom the line of is almost as sharply drawn between the E east alst and the west now as it was in those days between the north and the south the old political parties are being terribly shaken up party lines are being lost sight of and new associations and combinations are being formed all over the land at the present janc juncture turc A great principle is involved in ibis money question the Co constitution listi of the united states undoubtedly contemplated the use of both gold and silver eiler as coin and a tender in the payment of debts the framers of that instrument held the views which were inere then current as to the necessity of having lay both metals in circulation as money cut but of la te there had haa been an all evident determinate on to acle gate silver to the rear and to deprive it of its function as money at least as money as curlent in its place af gold we hai a been led to expect that there would bo be attempts made to infringe upon the constitution Is this an infringement many people say there should lie an international agreement between tho the united states and other leading commercial nations upon this silver question but others say say that it is unworthy a groat great nation like ours so eo independent so full afre of re sources and so free from european entanglements entangle ments to depend upon upon the agreement of other nations as to what metal this nation ahall have for its money looking at it from the standpoint of thel a seems to lie force in this view all manner of disasters are predicted however by those who wio are opposed to silver if the gold standard is not maintained there have been a great many sophi sophistical statements made concerning the dem onetia tion of kilver i in n 1873 but it i ia s a an n indisputable fact that silver received in ia that year a blow from which it has never recovered and which was given to it in the most stealthy and underhanded manner it may be that the advocates of silver may go too far in their advocacy of the rights of that meta it is difficult in discussing a question like this upon which people feel EO intensely to avoid going to extreme 1 but it is well for us who resides in these mountains to d divest ivest ourselves of prejudice and look upon these questions as free from passion as possible and cultivate a conservative feeling 1 it certainly would be in my opinion a violation of the constitution on for silver advocates ad to attempt to strike down gold and to deprive it of its function as money money and as a tender in payment of dests debts so also is it a violation of the constitution to attempt to make gold the only metal that pos possesses esses the function as a tender in payment of debts gold and silver should both be upheld and used and any attempt to deprive either of these metals of its value as a tender in payment of debts seems to me a clear violation of the of the constitution it may be that we who reside in in these mountains may find it necessary to uphold the cause of silver against those who would strike it down and on this account the greatest care should be used by the latter day saints to not allow themselves to be carried avay by party zeal in any dirt dirtion Mon that will impair the soundness of their judgment or that will in any manner interfere with the freedom of action which may be necessary on their part to do their whole duty to themselves and the government it is not at all probable that the en ell croach ments which wo we have been led to expect in atil ill be made upon the constitution will be of a very startling character to begin will wilh they may be of a very insidious character and will require close scrutiny to discern their danger but we ought to be like people people on the watchtower sc scanning annio the horizon in in every every direction and watching for dangers that may become threatening at any moment G GEO ro Q CANNON in the juvenile instructor |
