Show THE LOGAN tha history of this body of singers from the beginning EDITOR JOURNAL too tie dise discussion us sion in THE concerning tile tho logan choir brings bring t to I 1 my loy stid ill memories of early days y 8 in ill lilg logan and the beginning of tho the c hoir choir remembrances which after a lapse of thirty five years may interest inte iest the new generation in your beautiful city I 1 was for twenty four years one of the choir and spent in its ita fellowship many of the happiest hours of my life in july 1860 1 I removed from salt lake city to logan and camped with my two wagons on the spot now occupied by bv the tino tao st story ory house bouse built by T K R r ticks ricks I 1 immediately joined the choir and on tile next sunday went to meeting g which aias held in a large log school houte boue standing on a lot s nee ice ow ov tied ned by reuben gates cates its 3 roof vas ras covered with earth arid and the floor was formed of pun chions trunks of trees split ope open smoothed with an axe and placed close together the seats peats were also split plit tree trunks w with fth no backs except capt those tho the people carried with them and now for the choir h 0 i r G george e org 6 L farrell was leader wi with h his sisters S mrs mis mary diieno and mrs annis annie alyde as trebel frebla U and ai allo 0 in myself as bass N IV W erano with an old fiddle I 1 II 11 1 I e should I 1 IOU I 1 L I 1 say vo violin as and enoch lewis as tenor six members io in oil all mr birdno did not claim to be a violin so but was a more mere man simply a fiddler but we e felt quite proud to have an instrument in cut in the choir we occupied the so southeast U theart corner odthe of the room sitting bitting upon bocks blocks fut cut from tho the house logs and when it rained ined hard as sometimes it did we had bad to more our block until we found a place w where here the mud and w water ater frona from the roof would not di ip upon us I 1 digress a moment to say bay that although so humble a place many were the happy hours spent beneath its ita roof in religious meetings dances and theatres theartres the atres love and bio herhold he filling every heart candles were fastened to the by sticking a jackknife jack jacl knife into a crack of a log and closing the handle haddle against the candle to hold it in place and a potatoe with a hole bole cut in it and placed on some projection made quite a stylish canci candlestick lestick one had bad to be careful and not stub his toe the uneven floor and thereby fall to the floor such ouch accidents sometimes happened but they only iu in creased the good humor of all ex capt those who fell a and 1 I d was rather a welcome incident in the fall of 1860 apostle E T Den bensons sons baw mill began to furnish good floors and cos scabs scats is and shingles became a welcome substitute for dirt roofs in a few years the old logan loga n hall was built name named fun full hall hy by apostle denson benson nhen the building was waa dedicated as the thel house N nas as intended for concerts theaters dances etc us as well as for religious meetings meeting by this time the choir larger and ambitious to have an organ gave a concert which cleared for them aioo and the ladies of the choir solicited dona donations ion s fr from 0 7 house to houe in this its way t til 11 money for the organ was i procured and later the choir procured tile the large alian chandeliers degiers which formerly foi fbi merly now dow hung in the basement of the tabernacle every musician knows the no necessity ces eity of constant practice meetings to ensure a good choir and for years u e held t to c such practices a week furnishing our own lights fuel music books copying pa paper per etc sometimes by assessments among ourselves or by a concert given occasionally the cordial approval of the people or of the church did not contribute so much as a candle or a match I 1 do not know how it ii now dow I 1 hope suet such a pernicious policy has been abandoned by the people anti and that some material materi il support is given to so 10 admirable an institution george L farrell had many public duties and so resiL resigned b h q position is leader followed liy by A C smyth C C goodian Good nin in W K knowles and alexander lewi the present leader one w bom I 1 kno lanou to be in love with the divine art which
