to the people of I 1 this section STATEHOOD FOR UTAH this territory has been settled fettic 0 for almost a half century the pioneers came to the site of the present resent city of salt lake on july 24 1817 our state of probation has hag been long our schooling for statehood full arid and complete As illustrative or of our probationary pe period I 1 quote as follows from froin an all article on the soon after lie ho hal had reached ilia his majority almost his sole relation to the political all adaire airs of tile the united mates les has as been through the medium of territorial government which is merely it form of political slavery for tile the inhabitants inhabitant ilia his son eon wits was bo born rn in utah in 1848 or isio 1840 and lias has dwelt here all his dig jays days that committee on territories at tile the first arid and second sessions or of the late congress and indeed it is now conceded bv all as indisputable our population is ia active enterprising industrious and thrifty and will compare favorably in all tho the elements of good citizenship with any people our improvements both public and private are upon a liberal all and d generous scale commensurate with our wealth and ability educational and school chool advantages 0 are good and constantly being im improved we havo have an enlightened well ordered strong b self sustain aum ium 1 community enjoying all the advantages and comforts of modern cultivation and civilization I 1 suppose it will not be d disputed i t ed but for the teaching an ani I 1 practice ra ct lee of poly polygamy a my would ion long ago ago 0 have become a sovereign 0 sate s ate As here hereinbefore in before stated the practice of polygamy V has been absolutely abandoned the peoples or mormon church party has been di solved and no longer has either an organization or me membership m ber ship the highest authorities 0 of the mormon church their chief men and leaders upon all proper occasions have publicly denied that they claim the right 0 to or do or will attempt to exercise any church influence or power to control the political action of its mem bars it would seem that with too the removal of the only causes heretofore hindering binderin n and obstructing obstruction 0 adamia admission and a constant increase in population wealth and development of the territory that none should now be ba found to oppose entering 0 the union it is true however that a email minority continue to interpose objections to the conferring of this great boon upon the territory those composing it found their opposition upon a doubt as to the sincerity of the mormon people in in the action they have taken toward the settlement of the old questions of disturbance compelled to admit tile the actual occurrences which have taken place within their own knowledge they the take counsel of if their prejudice and fears and dully to the mormon people the coulm justice of being judged to their declarations and deeds deed h ascribing Z bothem to them motives and purposes poses which they ex presEly disclaim i it affords mo me pleasure however to be able to state stata that this class is constantly antly growing loss less and its numbers rapidly decrease de decreasing creasi n 0 I 1 many of those who have od inthe in the past all movements looking to utah s admission have abandoned their opposition and nox nov heartily favor it and give eat earnest nest support to the present movement I 1 know of no people who i a 1 their heir preparation for statehood have bave been confronted with as delicate arid and grave questions and AS abdual requiring C the cultivation and exercise of the highest public qualities yet the responsibility has been met with anil and forbearance and our people cop lei after yet doirs rs of earnest effort have peacefully solved their difficulties difficult cult ie san and d settled their differences the salutary lessons inculcated in the school of actual experience have admirably trained aud and fitted them for the duties and responsibilities biliti bili ties cs ora of a state government mutational tn in addition to the educational facilities afforded by the territorial university and agricultural col 1 lege age laich are maintained by direct appropriations from the general erp fund by the territorial legis 1 lature ati ire there are paid into the the public treasury general school taxes arrogating arre gating 3 pr p r nn an j num this abis taxis tax is apportioned ac cording to the school chool population by tho the territorial superintendent 4 district schools and P nd is expended for the support and maint maintenance ciance of free public district schools throughout tile the territory in the two live cities of salt lake and ogden during tho the past t two we years more than have buen been raised on bonds bond alone and expanded in tile tho erection of fres free public district rb schoolhouses 01 houses these buildings are of the most modern architecture supplied with the 0 very y latest appliances ances auces te more than children and would ha be a credit ere d it to any city 0 of the american americ continent besides the these CC duri during ilin the same period hundreds of other cities towns town and districts havoc have expended large sums burns in ill the erection of modern school buildings and when the scores of magni magnificent ficen t and costly colleges and academies academic which whai have been built by tho the different churches are arc taken into consideration it is not aspea speaking ki ii a extravagantly to say that no salto or territory orv has better educational facilities than can call bo be found in utah there has been less than 1 4 per cent arid and with such an increase in school buildings we have great hops of very materially ma serially teri ally ie ic this thia figure in the near future and of standing 0 foremost among tile alie states agricultural COLLEG 5 this institution is located at lopan logan about 90 miles north of salt ake city it was waa created by act of tile the legislative 11 assembly at the ses see ain of 1888 since that timi havo have beon been appropriated by our legislature to erect suitable buildings and establish the necessary farms and experimental stations very rapid and satisfactory satisfactory progress t has been made and the attendance att has been bean steadily iacre increasing asiar until it now numbers nearly this college is a favorite with the people and is destined to do a great work in its s sphere |
