repeated repealed failures of the previous republican administration to keep its pledges with utah we V e demand that all federal offices in utah shall be filled by utah men dien the democratic party in utah was the first to recognize the changed an conditions and was quickly followed in this by the national democracy we call the attention of the people to the fact that the republican party claims three fourths of the votes in the present liberal party chowing howin M holy bow large a number of I 1 republicans refuse to acknowledge the chan changed ed conditions the recognition given by the democratic party parly to this formerly oppressed and down trodden territory has exceeded exceed d all precedent ent and lias has surpassed surp ased the most hopeful anticipations of the people the triumphant democracy of the nation a has recognized honored lionor cd and elevated this territory so that in the eyes of utah herself of the country at large and of the whole world the territory stands with no superior it will be most fortunate for utah to reelect re elect a democratic legislature in order that tho the magnificent 0 progress now making 0 way may not bo be interrupted nor the admission of utah in any way retarded concerning we call the attention of the peo ph to the congressional democratic report on butali submitted march W 0 1892 which says pays there can be tie no excusable the government of the state must be in the 1 tate talo and not in the church anil and this fundamental principle of republican government which pas passes pases es beyond the mere suspension them depend upon territorial rit orial bounties for their continuation weare we arc unalterably opposed to h higher rates of taxation than the necessities of public expenditures demand except for value re regularly c u received no public mon moneys ays eys should be paid to any private person or corporations on th the 0 t I 1 that by directly aiding I 1 r uch such bailies par pai lies the public will be indirectly aided we hold that the legislature has no right under the plea of aiding 0 home industries to give public taxes to private persons or corporations while the public is indirectly benefited by every house that is built every improvement that is made and every legitimate eg enterprise that is started yet to admit that the govern government men t should attempt to pay its citizens for their business ventures that may directly or indirectly be of benefit to other persons person also leads to the theory that the government should support the people instead of the true doctrine that the people should support the government such stich a policy must end in despotism or in theoule the rule of the few that receive such favors from the government CLASSED AS ROBBERY non nERY the supreme court has said to lay with one hand band the power of the government overn ment on the property of the citizen aen and with tile the other oilier to bestow it upon favored individuals to aid private enterprises and build up private fortunes is ia none the less a robbery because it is done under the forms forma of law and is called taxation it if it be eaid aid that a supreme court coin 20 wallace CANNODE HE REGULATED if bounties could be given iven to every industry or improvement in proportion to the amount invested then oil only ly could the bounty system be just to all each receiving in proportion to the taxes lie he pays and then ali en the system oystein would bo be a nullity it is only because the system cannot be general that any persons favor it and it is usually favored by those who are already abundantly able to caro care for thecil selves while the masses of tile people have no one to protest against such injustice to all and favoritism toward a few THE TARIFF we denounce the attempt of certain elements of the republican par make it appear that tile democratic administration is responsible pon sible for the financial difficult ties that have recently this and other countries these difficulties have occurred while republican legislation 0 and policy were in complete and undisturbed operation and have greatly diminished since the democratic party lias has taken steps toward repealing the republican laws that are largely 0 responsible for them the attempt of the republican party to frighten the peoples representatives presenta tives out of reducing high taxes and reforming the war tariff is characteristic of tile the impudence of that party which does docs not trust the he people to ak a k the people not to do w what hat they have thrice with heavier emali emphasis a sis each time decreed shall bedone bo done is to tell the people that they are arc fools and do not know what is best for themselves to attempt to frighten the people out of reforming brinins ret the robber tariff rifT by telling them the in that the prospect of lower taxes brings 1 on pallI panics CS 15 is to insult their intelligence and is to tell them that they arc unfit for self government we commend the early action of the democratic arty to reform tile the present illogical and unjust system of taxation and we ire warn the people that that the forces of ill b gotten wealth and plutocracy arc a arrayed it against 9 ainest every ever effort that tends to abolish the present system of favoritism toward the wealthy or that tends to do justice to t the he masses of the people we va encourage the people to stand by their colors and never to relax their efforts till the burdens of unequal taxation are arc lifted from the overburdened b ack of labor and more fairly distributed upon the wealthy the luxurious fux urious and the idle classes of society I 1 1 I we ave congratulate M the people upon the rapid and determined steps of the party of their choice since it has I 1 been J een in in power in the direction of reforming the tariff revising the financial lars and giving the people control ov over e r their own elections by the repeal of the federal election laws lairs we sympathize with ta the bic R republican party in its efi effort ort to hurry the democratic administration to reform in six months the unjust systems which have been growing ing up durin during thirty years vears of republican rule and as a result of republican legislation EDUCATION we believe that the int interests crests of the people of the tha whole territory would be sub served by a union of the agricultural college and the university of utah is as t there he e lis is room for both institutions ansti ti 0 in the buildings 7 s now 0 occupied ui 11 p e by the former and as t the e iwo ivo could jo bo maintained at less ex expense p ense to the territory than is is i now necessary to maintain the university alono alone we favor the location of this joint institution in logan lagan utah as being in every way the most favorable in the territory SILVER yo we favor the free coinage of 0 both gold and silver without ann any I 1 discrimination against either and the use of both metals a as 9 money we characterize the of dilver by the republican party parly in 1873 as a crime against the nation we favor the repeal of the sherman law which lias has destroyed confidence confideD CO in our monetary system and has precipitated a money panic we favor a readjustment of our oura unsafe financial laws |
