Show A LETTER FROM SAMOA the writer gives an account of his jo arney thither the following 0 communication received by tho the Sv vinyard family from th the sam can islands by a cousin cousin there ozere on a mission is published li ched OT as it may bo be of interest to readers of ofine JOURNAL I 1 thought you yon would expect to te hear ironi from me inc soon so it is with i pleasure that I 1 nw new malce make the at I 1 left home ionic on she be of may and lad had a very pleasant trip to sen francisco r arriving rivin a there dr de v about aboul noon the ship did not start till two tiro days later so BO I 1 had a good time looking around there were eight of us five going to new zeland and three to Samoa wo we marched around as though we were going to take the toi town we saw many things that ahr we had never seen before the golden gato gate park parkis is beyond description for grandeur and sutro ile hights ats is another beautiful place wo we lind had not gone far before the people began to feed the fish the wind blew very hard and the water was rough but I 1 could not help showing my charity to the fish when I 1 saw how freely so many others douat donated cd but in a day or two people not so liber liberal alfor for they found out that good food was not very plentiful and it was best to keep what they had the third day out they stopped the ship prid end hurried one of the engineers that took poison and killed himself tile the day before nothing else happened worth speaking of till wo we got to Hono honolulu lulb the ship stayed staved there six hours so we had a clia cliance nce to seo that town towie our crowd added one more for 0 of th the e missionaries came ca me to mee and toioi it arouni to llie pal parts of the city the city is built close to the shore so it did not take tn ke long to see sec it there are sonic some fine buildings 11 1 but the majority are not very good however the tropical trees and foliage make it look very nice nice and pleas pleasant ant I 1 was very much delighted with what we saw aliel D S have a very nice church chuich there f just above is a hill from the to top P of which you can see tile the city and tile the surrounding 0 country we went upon that from froin there we went down to the ship and I 1 was vary very 0 glad when we ire got started for while we were on the land it seemed as though it was rocking and made madous us as sic sick k nearly as when alen wo first started on tho the ship sievert seven days more we sailed and the green island of upolu came in sight that is the island I 1 am now on there are ten in the ta group but some of them are not very large za tho the three largest are arc the only ones that have got our missionaries on viz upolu tutuila and savaii afi if I 1 ever saw a pretty place in in my life it was when we were coming in to apia abia you cannot see bare ground any where except in tile roads palms and different lt kinds of trees cover tile the land and even the roads are arc covered with moss and ferns the banian tree is quite a curiosity to me r the food consists of bread fruit taro fish and cocoanut coco anut juice prepared and cooked in different bayr chickens Uh ickens and pigs are aljo alio used for food and I 1 will not try to describe how they cook their food but suffice to say a dish wo would uld not make a sick person feel as though he wanted to eat cat but I 1 have got so that I 1 like it and it tastes very nice I 1 we were met at apia abia by the president of the mission georg george browning and wm low of smith field cache county wo we went to fagalii Fag alii about three miles distant where the mission mission house is and wo we met sever several al others elders and sisters there we were all 0 glad to see each other al though we had bad never seen ea each el I 1 other before but it seemed as though we had been acquainted with each other all our lives I 1 did not feel as though I 1 was a stranger there and I 1 havo have often i thought of it since I 1 never had tho the peace and satisfaction before in my life that I 1 enjoyed while I 1 was there at Faff alii I 1 have believed that tho the doctrines wo taught were true but never knew fo for sure before and now I 1 am sure that the 0 gospel ro pcs that I 1 have been to preach is the true gospel of christ I 1 will not weary you with a k long anar letter this time lime for I 1 am very bus busy le learning learnia arnim 13 the language 0 and have not got much time to do any thing else you must give my love to all the folks and tell them to write whenever they can and I 1 will try and answer them I 1 hope this will find you enjoying good health as I 1 am thankful to 6 say ay T I 1 am I 1 hope the he lord will iless you in your labors you will not be on the earth in vain F 1 COURT |
