Show CACHE CONFERENCE I AP apostles and merrill address i the people BEFORE 1 or OF SERVICES ON SUNDAY the growing extravagance of the people and hard times are discussed the quarterly stake conference of cache stake of zion met in logan tabernacle last sunday at 10 2 in president orson S inith smith presiding the choir under the leadership of professor lewis rendered some ex excellent musical selections president orson smith sinith made it a few brief remarks on the condition of the cache stake of zion apostle franklin D richards spoke of the evil of having too much self confidence many man y who have been guilty of this have been I 1 known to fall away from the truth we should rather consider that in ourselves we are nothing there is one way in in which we may consider ourselves safe aud and is t to 0 keep within thin the bonds of the eternal cov covenant anant that we have made with god our heavenly father if ono one or of us should undertake to do something thin outside of these holy bonds he makes himself a target for the evil one if he be should feel BO 80 confident in himself liim self as to say that ile he will never apostatize front from tile the truth it rather seems as if satan w were ere trying to lead him astray the E evil vil one or his emissaries go abroad unseen seek i ing ng whom they may devour and we have got to live in suspicion and apprehensions in such a way that wo we shall regulate our lives so as to stand not in our own name but in the name of our lord jesus christ in this is our safety and protection that is the only name by which our brethren bretl iren of the last dispensation can obtain deliverance from the powers of C evil il so was it with the servants of god in former dispensations in the name of the lord jesus christ they could rebuke the spirits of evil and in his name deliverance w was as given them apostle richards also spoke to the following effect I 1 remember one morning in in nauvoo I 1 started out to walk down by tho the river the prophet joseph lived near there but I 1 had no idea of seeing him as I 1 thought lie ha was in hiding f from r orn his hia ene enemies inies aut but to in my astonishment as ment I 1 met him right on the sidewalk I 1 asked him do you feel safe around d here jose josephs hs reply was 1 I feel iafe when the lord protects me well now that ik the only safety that we have against the adversary of our souls but if we do not in all bilings accomplish what we desire andreol wedo we do not make as much headway as we would like we anre need not be discouraged the lord is merciful and ilia his law is ia before us to teach us to act intelligently if a roan man is ia feeling 0 that lie he is not in oving moving along in the most propitious manner not accomplishing g as much good as lie would desire and does docs not see the way to accomplish the good he would what shall he be do shall lie ho adhere to the weakness and ceble ness of his condition when you see that you do not do as well you would like to but aro arc trying to overcome you do not need to measure yourself to that low condition talk of the truth expound it and that will help you and strengthen you to make advances and get on in your pro 0 gres don and it is the more manly way too isyou do not 0 get along right the first time do not be discouraged but keep on trying until you accomplish it I 1 heard once of one man tantalizing in 9 another because he was poor if a man has goods and in d blessings more than another lie ho is ie more under obligation to bless his bis hemblo brother I 1 believe that blessings of this sort are often put into our hands to see what we will do with t them eni whether to satisfy our vanity or open our hands to help the needy I 1 pray that the spirit of the holy gospel will animate us more and ana more and sanctify our affections and the thoughts of our hearts that we may be enabled to cling unto the principles of eternal truth apostle M W merrill was wag the next speaker lie ile had in mind a plan which he lit would be well to adopt that w was to erect in the tabernacle block a pavilion large enough to accommodate all who wished to come to conference he believed that a good many more would come in from the settlements to attend conference if a larger seating capacity capa cit could be provided the pavilion could also be used for other purposes such as socia bles and holiday recreations our young people cannot find a suitable place for bonic of their aniu amusements without paying n tribute for the use of it indeed it seems some have got the idea that they cannot have a celebration without having money at the back of it butchis But othis this was not the case in the early days here now a largo large pavilion could be erected here with very little money as tho the labor could be provided to get it put up then the people could meet in it and hold their celebrations without spending money as they usually do I 1 do not believe much in patronizing foreign theatrical troupes I 1 believe we have an abundance of talent among our own people if it were only searched out and encouraged cou raged we have too much ofa of a tendency to expend our means for that which is imported some will even buy trees and shrubbery and hops that have g grown rown in the cast and that are not half so good as those which could be got 0 ot it at home in this way our mon money ey lias has gone into the hands of strangers in the east and today we fino find ourselves in the bondage of debt let us ua endeavor to extricate ourselves from this indebtedness so that we nye may be free |
