arrison II into the white house lie ile afterward became a sort of standing anding sl cond condi candidate date for president but never again got an election vote lie he was nominated by bv the free soil party four years later any by the know nothing or american party narty eight years afterwards but failed to carry a single state either cither time thue gen NV winfield infield scott went down those elections got comparatively ively small majorities of the popular vote while they had four fifths of the votes in the electoral college the political leaders of 1840 and 1852 were surprised as much at at the result in twofee years as chairman carter was when lie he ikeard heard that ohio had gone democratic or wilson when he heard beard from west virginia there were J votes in the first elet electoral toral colle college M the one that elected george washington president the first time twelve candidates for president were voted for and washington got 69 votes voter on the first ballot in some soine of the states tile the electors were elected by the legislatures there is no record of the popular vote tote in 1792 there were no conven mentions vent ions platform sor nominations washington got of the electoral votes that year the election of a president was without special interest inhere st until 1800 when thomas jefferson and aaron burr received an equal number of electoral votes and the election was thrown into the house of representatives ta tives which elected Jeff jefferson after ag ballots in ISO 1801 thomas Jef jefferion Je ferFon got 10 of the electoral ballots this could not be called a landslide because his opponent was a fedei federalist aliet and that thai party was then ery cry weak and electors were chosen by the leg legis gie lasures latu resin in six states state s ill I 1 1820 the federalist party hai bad practically to ef dyitt it t and am james monroe had bad no appos opposition ile he got every electoral vote except one alle which was ceet for fer john quincy adarno the airet formal 1 political roli con mentions vent ions to nominate candidates for president were held in 1812 1832 the democratic convention met in caa army in the indian wars tyler of virginia was the candidate for vice president tile the chies again all adopted opted no platform the democrats nominated martin van nan buren for president and adopted ft a platform which declared against internal improvements against 1 national binks banks and in favor of efa a tariff for revenue only the famous tippecanoe and tyler too cr log cabin campaign that followed is within the memory of many men now living but the result was a surprise to the politicians tic ians harrison swept the country getting of the electoral votes voted C of the popular vote however he be received only van buren getting four years later james K polk and henry clay were tile the opposing candidates for president polk got electoral votes and clay in the popular vote folks plurality over clay was only this was largely due to the great personal popularity of clay it in 1848 the whigs bics elected zachary taylor by a small majority because he had bad made a candidates were obscure men they were comparatively unknown in politics or public life and their greatest recommendations ions appeared to be that no one knew anything against them the whigs nomi nominated gated gen winfield scott who was commander in chief of the american army in the Alex mexican ican war both panties pai ties adopted long platforms the only essential differ ence in the platforms was eliat the democrats a again M ain opposed internal improvements and tariff protection while the whip platform m favored both the free soil party entered the r ight that nominated bated john P hale of new hampshire for president the campaign 0 was without special features but when the returns from the election came in it was found that a greater landslide had occurred than the ono one in 1810 1840 there were then thirty one states stales in the union and votes in tile the electoral college or of these pierce received 2 34 a and nd scott 42 that was the greatest landslide on record and it proved the death blow of the whig party but great as a was pierces majority in the electoral college in the popular vote lie he ran only a little more than votes ahead of gen scott the popular vote of the two candidates was pierce 1 scott 10 four years later millard fillmore the whig or american candidate for president got only 8 electoral vote vot in that year the republican airty developed unexpected strength and gave john C fremont its candidate for fer president ill electoral votes owing to the peculiar political conditions existing in this country in and 1872 the large major icv of the ibe votes of tile the electoral col 1 lege received by grant can not be classed as landslides or political revolutions re the democratic landslide of 1874 which demonstrated the fact that thai there were several hundred thousand more than republicans despite the complexion of tho electoral college gave the democrats control of the lower house of congress hy by a large majority this was also regarded as d a rebuke of the republican party for demone silver in 1873 but the landslide of 1892 was in every way the greatest one on record cleveland was elected by tile crrea 0 greatest test mijo majority rity of both both popular and electoral vote ever received by a candidate for tile the office of president his majority of the popular vote was albota almota ablio zt a million some of the interesting features ot this landslide were that t the democrats carried every state elate that was classed as doubtful and carried tome ionic of the strongest strong sst republican i states in the country divide the states state s into the usual geographical 0 divisions eastern or new england northern middle southern and western states and it will wili be found that the democratic ticket has a majority of the electoral votes of every ever section the democratic ticket had a good plurality of the electoral votes of 0 f all the states north of mason and dix oni oils i line if the democrats had lost tile the four states of new cw york indiana new jersey and connecticut which were regarded added as the real battle ground of the campaign and had always been classed as doubtful states slates cleveland and stevenson would still have had electoral votes voice or ten more than enough to elect them A peculiar feature of this recent land slide is not that republicans have carried ohio illinois iowa or pennsylvania these are always re regarded 0 added as republican strongholds strong holds I 1 nor that they have carried new york indiana or new jersey which have been as often j republican as democratic but hat bat the so eo called solid south is ati braben len L and that tennesee ten and ali cs iri ginia have this year gone reau ali can this country has reached a paint p int i in history where landslides are inevitable and periodical The Thes next wave will be like that of 92 and will I 1 sweep the republican party from power As the world says tim THE NEXT PRE nENT WILL HE BE A |
