Show letter from brooklyn EDITOR JOURNAL since the college year closed at cornell I 1 have bave busied myself traveling about through southern new york it is by far the most picturesque section of country that I 1 have ever seen there is is nothing of that awe inspire ing 0 Z grandeur of scenery as I 1 have been accustomed to see it at home in the mountains that pierce the blue with points tipped with the everlasting snows and in canyons with their boarin roaring 0 cataracts of pure cold water and overhanging cliffs but for quiet and simple beauty such as hills carpeted with rich green gra grass ss and shaded by ever greens and the majestic maple and oak unexpected nooks with the same lavish drapery farm houses villa villages es and cities bitle dotting the whole it seems seeing to me to be faultless less except that the eve eye almost grows grows weary at the sameness of the scenery and longs 0 to be rested by a contrast of some kind yesterday morning I 1 took the train at goshen the county seat of orange and after a ride of about two hours arrived at cornwall on the hudson here the ex excursion ur steamer angler awaited tile the arrival of our train we NN e were soon aboard and steaming down the matchless hudson the serea seri ealion tion that a I 1 man feels as lie he settles down for it a fine live five hour ride on oil the surface of one of the most beautiful endless band ol of pure silver on oil both sides ides tho the highlands 0 extend for miles along the river and then gradually di disappear appear suddenly the river broadens from about two miles into the uzee which 11 1 seven miles from shore to shore A more charming scene than that which burst upon our view at this point cannot can not be imagined on the right land hand was the thriving village of haverstraw Haner straw on the th eleft lea and a little below croton point which juts out uto into the river like abree clad pier the city of sing 0 sing 0 sends up its church spires and seems choly indifferent to the twelve hundred criminals working out their terms of imprisonment in this celebia celebrated t ed prison built on tile the very very brink of the water As a striking illustration of now what is supposed to be an effectual barrier is often made it a means of escape by men whose genius has taken a wrong direction the story is told that a man serving out a lour long term in sing sing contrived a means mean of escape by swimming c under water to ft a place of safety being supplied with air ail through a tube attached to a decoy duck the practical eye of one 0 of f the guards paw something suspicious about the bird however and the mans genius was left it anre A little anwer is located tarrytown back of which is the brid bridge go immortalized I 1 by ichabod
