the twenty fourth and witnessed the celebration you would have thought we were still alive and full of enjoyment enjoy men I 1 at the break of day the noise of the cannon 1 I mean anvils awoke tho the citizens from their pe peaceful cebul slumbers umbers bl announcing that the anni anniversary of tho the pioneers e entering salt lake valley had dawned at sunrise the flap flag of the nation the glorious stars arid and stripes was hoisted to tile the top of th the e liberty pole on the public square flags 0 were hoisted by the various merchants arid and citizens zens at half past nine am the anvils boomed again notifying the citizens to gather on oil the public square to witness the grand procession which at the cast end of main street as follows 1 franklin brass band 3 the pioneers represented by A P shumway one of the pioneers who lode in a carri carriage age n which was decorated with portraits of brigham young dieber C kimball willard ilief richard ard and president wilford N woodruff and council in the carriage with A P shumway were president joseph F smith vm in L webster samuel C parkinson son and prest aco C parkinson S U covered wagons oxen etc 4 utah as it was in 47 18 48 arid and 59 agricultural implements implement of olden time thile such as homemade home made mad 0 plows scythes sey thes cradles etc represented by benjamin porter and bryant hawks A very true adders etc 6 A wagon wagon 0 finely decorated representing 0 three groups as follows strength by three thre a very stout young men dressed in tights inno innocence ence by four young children faith hope and charity by three young ladies dressed in white this was a beautiful sight the pleasure of the group was marred by a sad accident the three young ladies faith hope and charity were standing upon a platform at the rear end of the waon wagon when word was given by the ni marshal arshal of the day da mr wil william iliam kirkup to move up a little and as the wagon started the three young ladies fell backward to the ground two of them were badly hurt miss bliss burp burg had her hip dislocated and BE miss hansen Hanse rhad had her shoulder boulder dislocated and also her back was hurt doctor finnell a gentleman from california was called and lie he attended the young ladies put the ap hip arid and shoulder boulder wa to their places with his skilful aid the two young ladies were made ancog as comfortable for table as possible I 1 this accident put a damper on our proceedings for a while but 0 the marshal in a short tim time e had everything 0 in order again 0 next came in order was a wagon with platform beautifully decorated with lace ribbon ribbons 9 flowers red white and blue bunting 0 on this platform was thirteen young youn M ladies dressed in white representing 0 tile the thirteen original states they wore red sashes with the names of each state in blue letters this outfit was drawn by two fine horses decorated and led by two young 0 gentlemen on foot dressed in costume in front seated above the thirteen young ladies were two little girls dressed very pretty adorned with flowers etc representing the two youngest states idaho and utah this outfit was grand and admired by all next came the oneida INfer mercantile cantile union and woollen factory in a large wagon with largo large platform decorated handsomely with all kinds of merchandise ii silks and satins gatins dry goods and all kinds of homemade home made woollen goods made fi aiom om the star woollen mills which was a grand sight seated in the wagon were mr F C parkinson manager of the union with mr james herd licad head clerk and other clerks of tho the esta establishment this huge buge outfit was drawn by bv four huge h horses next camo ame c NY TAL webster cos roer mer dantile establishment which had a large 0 wagon 0 finely decorated with red white and blue aud and all kinds of merchandise diso this outfit was A very fine next came mr B D F kitar cos drug store represented by mr rostin hostin and dr finnell this was a very fine outfit ne neatly all gotten up tip representing the inside of the drug druce store next camo came the oneida flouring floering Flou ring 0 mills mill represented by the manager dhanan ger mr thomas poulter in a carriage 1 nicely decorated next in order came a fine display led by mr thomas L smart jame packer and seth thomas representing progression up to 1894 in this outfit were all kinds of farming 0 implements a thresher with will engine engine 0 all in working order this was a grand sight D then came am sir mr monson S sons representing their sawmill saw mill and door and sash establishment in a wagon this out outfit fit was at work sawing pickets making scroll work etc and wa a very good representation also mr george geore FM F marshall amarshall and samuel morgan in in a wagon representing presenting re the wheel wrights of franklin the procession marched through L the principal streets of the town to the public square the marshal then called the to order choir sang prayer by president george C parkinson Par kingon music by the brass band speech by A 1 P shumway one of the pioneers song by mr ezra monson and co speech by IV M webster on the settling of the vallies after the pioneers entered son song 0 by mrs naomie blenden hall and company speech by mr james herd on the mormon Ba tallion music by tho the brass band speech by president joseph F smith on the trials and sufferings suu erinEs of the latter day saints while robbed and forced to flee from their homes to the dreary wil wilderness wilberne derne s music bythe by the INI monson ODson broth brothers ers the choir sang benediction by bishop L L hatch thus ended one of the finest celebrations we ever had in franklin in the afternoon there was dancing inar for tho the children and games of all kinds for prizes among them being a game of base ball between the franklin reds and nashville blues for a pair of gloves franklin reds on top took the prize we had a grand ball at night all in all our celebration was a grand rand success with the exception of the accident in the commence the two young 0 ladies who are getting along nicely great credit is due the committees for the able manner in which they conducted the whole affair OBSERVER |
