Show MY FIRST LOVE AND I. So now we are parted, my first love and I. And though you might think it, I don't mean to die. With grieving about her: Oh no! no! I can, By all that is lovely, be more of a man. Well, we loved in a way (of that there's no doubt), We'd kiss when we met, ‘xcept when we fell out. But now it's all over, I don't feel to blame, For hundreds, no doubt, have done just the same. Sometimes I feel sorry with thoughts of the past, But, I know very well that those feelings won't last! For, for all that I've done I find recompense, That once in my life I've used common sense. But, ah, ‘tis a pity that two should turn ‘round, And all their best feelings dash thus on the ground. Forget all their vows, and their promises break, And all, in most cases, for some trifle's sake. Had I been more careful, I'd never have crossed The bound'ry of Friendship; ah! but to be tossed, About on the Ocean of Love like a waif; But then it's all over and I am still safe. James H. Wallis, Logan. |
