Show OGDEN VALLEY. On a recent trip to Ogden Valley we were very much pleased indeed by what we saw and heard. We had the privilege of attending the conference of the Y. M. M. I. A., at which a most enjoyable and inspiriting influence prevailed. The Saints of Huntsville, the largest settlement in the valley, are presided over by Bishop F. A. Hammond, who shows forth the spirit of a kind and wise father in the exercise of his calling. He possesses the love and confidence of the Saints of his ward, or he could not exert so marked an influence over them as he does. The people of this little valley are quite poor; though hardworking, frugal and industrious, and the reason they do not more rapidly increase in wealth is because the climate is against them. Only certain crops, and a few kinds of small fruits can be raised in the valley. The total tax of the district amounts to but about $100, yet in a little more than two years the people have erected a fine gothic meeting house, a structure of fine, handsome, symmetrical and imposing appearance at a cost of about $??. It is a marvel considering the circumstances of those who built it. It is nearly finished, and will, it is expected, be ready for dedication July 21. Ogden valley is a near neighbor to Cache, the range of mountains which forms our southern boundary being all that separates us from it. |
