The Dramatic Club is preparing the touching drama of "Ben Bolt" which will doubtless be presented before long. Lost.-A small iron trunk key by a gentleman in Logan. The finder will confer a favor by leaving it at this office. Work is progressing rapidly on the new school house in the 5th ward. It will be a structure of beauty, symmetry and solidity. Work on the new Fourth ward co-op. [co-operative] store, situated immediately north of the premises of Zion's Board of Trade is progressing rapidly. WE omitted mention, in our account of the hive of bees placed on exhibition by Geo. [George] Hibbard. It was interesting to observe the insects through the glass side of the hive. Jno. [John] P. Smith has just completed the erection of a molasses mill and boiler, a short distance northeast of the Temple. He says the cane crop was light in Logan this year. WE are pleased to acknowledge the receipt of the catalogue of the Masonic library, Salt Lake City. The library contains a total of 3,800 bound volumes and comprises very fine selections in its various departments. Christopher Peihil?, Esq.[Esquire] is the librarian. ON Monday last a little boy belonging to a family, who are traveling by train through the country and who were camped just south of the city, was kicked by a horse on the right cheek, cutting a gash on it about three inches long. Doctor Ornsby sewed up the wound with four stitches. THERE was no mail from the south last Monday. Reason, the party who carries the mail from the depot to the postoffice missed his connection with the train, and the mail agent would give the mail sacks to no one else, consequently they were taken to the terminus, thence back to Ogden, and on Tuesday reached Logan again. ON Tuesday evening last, a young man named George M. Peacock, who was very drunk, created a disturbance of the peace near the depot, by cursing, swearing, and "raising Ned" generally. He was arrested, but the officers had to get a wagon to convey him to jail., where he was placed for the night. On Wednesday morning he was tried and [unreadable line]. ON Tuesday last, as Mr. David James a blacksmith at the U. O.[United Order] Foundry, was engaged in shoeing a fractious horse, the animal kicked him with great force on the inside of the right thigh causing such intense pain as to make Mr. James feel extremely faint for a short time. We understand that a soreness of the muscles of the thigh which is sufficient to keep Mr. James from work, was the only serious result. BROTHER Rasmus Neilsen brought to our sanctum a few days since, three fine specimens of molasses; one two years old was very much like moistened brown sugar; another made from amber cane was very fine, while the third, made from common cane looked so much like honey that it has been repeatedly mistaken for that article. All were made by Bro. [Brother] Neilsen. He also brought specimens of White ??? and sweet corn, both of which took first prize at the fair as did also the molasses. THERE came near being a fire at Ormsby's drug store on Monday last. The clerk, Cyrus Napper was evaporating, by means of an alcohol lamp, some syrup of spirits to the proper consistency, when a boy in the store accidentally struck his foot against the vessel containing the preparation, upsetting both it and the lamp. Instantly a blaze leaped up to the height of several feet, and the store and contents were in imminent danger for a few moments, as there were several gallons of inflammable liquids in vessels near the spot. Luckily, no serious damage resulted. |
