Show THIEVES FRUSTRATED.

Reece and Farr's herdmen who were taking charge of their stock on the range in the vicinity of Newton and Clarkston had a little adventure a few nights ago. The boys were in their cabin near the Newton Reservoir and had some eleven head of horses feeding in the immediate vicinity, when late in the evening after lights were extinguished they heard a noise like the animals running. On looking out the figures of the horses were seen passing between the cabin and the reservoir, and behind them was a man on horseback. The night was so dark that this discovery could not have been made had it not been for the reflection of the light from the water. A horse which was fastened near by was immediately mounted and chase was given to the would-be thief who for some distance kept the herd before him. The horses, one by one, dropped away until none remained but those ridden by the pursuer and the pursued. After traversing 10 or 12 miles in a northerly direction, as the unknown person proved to have a good riding animal, the chase was abandoned. Next morning the animals were found in a somewhat scattered condition, but the boys were glad enough to find them at all, as it was by mere chance that they discovered the thief in time to frustrate his design. |
