Show The number of outrages committed in this part of the country on the persons of white females by Negro brutes is something appalling. Scarcely a week passes but that some new instance, with all its attendant horrors is detailed through the telegraphic dispatches. These frightful occurrences have grown too frequent; and the people of the East and South seem to have arrived at a determination to visit speedy justice upon the heads of the wretches who perpetrate this awful crime. In many cases lynchings occur, but now a new phase has developed. A Negro by the name of Copps at Fort Worth, recently committed rape on the person of Miss Thornton, a charming white girl; and when a jury of honest men had been deliberating on a verdict for only ten minutes, it was returned to the court that he should be hanged. Next to stealing, this awful crime seems to be the one most frequently committed by Negroes; and something should be done immediately to effectually check them in their fiendish acts. |
