Show BRIGHT WATER FOR ME. That part of Logan known as the Island on last Monday and Tuesday would hardly answer the definition of the name it bears. The continual freezing and overflowing of the river near the U. O. Foundry, caused the water to break over its banks. On Monday, main street for half a mile south of the bridge, was covered with ice and water; some houses in the vicinity being surrounded by the liquid. Later in the day the water had seeped through the ground and filled cellars and wells to within [unreadable line] face. Road supervisor, N. Hansen, learning of the situation, proceeded with a force of hands to clear the channel of the river from the Union Mills to the U. O. Foundry. This turned the water out of the street; but the loosened? ice dammed up the water turning it out again at Laudberg? & Garth's? planing mill; whence it flooded that part of the island to the southwest of there. Here again some houses were surrounded by the flood, one family being thus compelled to move out. In the afternoon a portion of the water was turned into another channel above. On Tuesday the flood continued to some extent; but a number of men with crowbars and iron rods cleared the river bed of ice so effectually as to prevent any further trouble. Steps should be taken by the proper authority to prevent a recurrence of such a disaster. Water is a good thing in its place, but a flood is "too much of a good thing." |
