Show BLOCKADE. The unprecedented snow storm of Thursday and Friday of last week was general the entire length of the U. & N. On Thursday night several trains that were in motion had to be abandoned. During Friday and Saturday it was storming terrifically in Marsh valley and at points north, and little could be done to clear the track. On Saturday morning a snow plow and five engines were ditched near Pocatello in trying to get through, and a track had to be built around them. The trains were all snow bound north of Logan, so that none was run between here and Ogden from Thursday until Monday night. Master Mechanic Croft's department worked heroically to clear the track, and almost superhuman exertions were made to get trains down from the north. Supt. Thatcher says the snow was the heaviest that ever fell since his connection with the road. Trains have been running with more or less regularity since Monday last, but it has been storming most of the time since Thursday on the north end of the road, making it impossible to keep that part of it open. The hardships undergone by the railroad boys have been very severe, but they have borne them bravely and have not flinched from duty. The U. & N. crews are a special set of fellows, and the more you know them the better you like ‘em. |
