Show FRIGHTFUL FIRE. Most of the newspaper offices of New York are congregated close together in a region of which Park Row lies near the centre. Bounded on one side by Park Row was a large ??-shaped block of buildings occupied by the Times and several other journals. On Tuesday last a fire broke out in this block and soon made ruins of the greater portion of it. The loss will be about $1,000,000. Some horrifying scenes were witnessed during the fire. Several persons leaped from high windows, only to fall upon the pavement and be killed by the concussion. The President of the Fire Commissioners says he would not be surprised to learn that from 60 to 75 persons perished. Others think the loss of life will prove to be much less. |
