Show A DELIGHTFUL AFFAIR. Rarely has it been our lot to participate in a more thorough enjoyable affair than was the ball given in Logan Hall on Friday evening last; by the Y.L.M.I.A. of the First ward. It was well attended but not crowded, and the occasion was favored with the presence of Hon. Moses Thatcher and wife and Mayor Wm. B. Preston and wife. Throughout the evening the ladies did the choosing of partners, and for once all wall flowers were all of the masculine gender. The gents, however, were generally? permitted to invite the ladies to lunch? ??? varied? lunch which the ball committee had prepared, and which was really a very ???????? features of the affair, and so tempting as to attract all the ?????. It was spread upon a table on the stage. It was exceedingly interesting to notice the tact displayed in the fair ones in securing partners. Each was provided with a program and pencil, and in a quiet, polite, lady-like and ????able manner she would approach the lucky gent, and request his autograph on her program, which she managed to keep well filled ahead. A young man of our acquaintance thinks its better to be chosen once, than to choose [be chosen] a dozen times; but if a fellow don't get choose [chosen] how is it? The committee were Mrs. E. Stoddard, Miss Annie Carlisle, and Miss Ida Thatcher. They met many unexpected obstacles in getting up the affair and labored assiduously to make it a success, and they deserve to be congratulated on the result. Miss Thatcher discharged the duties of floor-manager in an admirable manner, and Miss Carlisle received the ducats from the ladies as they escorted their dependent partners into the hall, with the air of one who was used to it. Let us have some more affairs of the kind; managed by the ladies, and thereby avoid the ????? features usually seen on such occasions when managed by males; and in the meantime let thanks be given to the Y.L.M.I.A. of the first ward for introducing a delightful innovation. |
