Show HORRIBLE DEATH. Some years ago Elder John Henderson of Hyrum was called to go to Arizona to settle, and he responded. From letters lately received by some of his wife's friends in Hyrum is gleaned a few particulars of the manner in which he came to his death, which must have been a dreadful fate. His home was in Smithville, Graham county, but it seems that he was out away from home, with his team and wagon, when he was attacked by Indians. He took shelter in the timber, and made a gallant defense. Firing 160 shots, all the cartridge he had, before he was captured. The Indians bound him, took him to his wagon, placed him in it, and set the whole on fire burning him alive. We were unable to glean any further particulars of the dreadful affair, which it is said occurred during the latter part of August last. The letters received do not give the details. Elder Henderson is remembered in Hyrum as a good and brave man, of undoubted courage, and a good shot with a rifle. It is to be deeply regretted that the Indians mistook him for an enemy, and forces a defense on his part that very likely resulted in the death or wounding, or both, of more than one of them. Elder Henderson's wife desires to return to Hyrum. |
