Show NEWS OF THE WORLD. KILLED HIS GUARD. [unreadable] Tonight a young man named Pierce, a prisoner in the county jail for horse stealing, fired through the window at his guard, Ted Franks, killing him instantly. A mob at once gathered from 4,000 to 5,000 strong, who dragged Pierce out of the jail and hung him to a tree in a business like way, and then dispersed. The murder was entirely unprovoked. A DEN OF DASTARDS. Denver, Oct. 3.-The Republican's Pitkin special says: Several citizens were lately robbed and badly beaten. The robbers were Charles Briggs, proprietor of a dance hall, and his associates. To day after warning the inmates, they set fire to the hall. Briggs fired into the crowd without effect. An unknown party returned the fire, fatally wounding him. TALMAGE ON THE RAMPAGE. New York, Oct. 4.-A large part of Talmage's sermon on Sunday was upon "Mormonism." He said "It needed a father and husband like Garfield to understand the virtue of a Christian home and to annihilate the abomination of ‘Mormonism.' Perhaps the time has not yet come; perhaps it was necessary that a nation's indignation should be aroused to a greater pitch of anger against ‘Mormonism' before the extirpation should be attempted. I will not say that Guiteau was a ‘Mormon' nor would I dare to say that he was not; but Guiteau says he shot Garfield in the name of the Lord. If he was not a ‘Mormon,' he was one of the Oneida Community whose chief doctrine was the right to a profusion of wives. He had the spirit of ‘Mormon' ??, of ‘Mormon' cruelty, and ‘Mormon' murder. I should not wonder if on the great day when all such things are revealed, it will be found that he was the paid agent of that old bag which is making mouths at high Heaven between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevadas." HELD AS SLAVES. San Francisco, Oct. 4.-A Sydney dispatch of Aug. 29th gives an account of the ransom by an exploring expedition to Bouka Island, of the Italian Luigi Boero who had been held prisoner by the natives for 15 months. He with five others were captured and held as slaves and subjected to the must horrible treatment. All succumbed to the illnesses and died, except Boero and perhaps one other who was heard of, but could not be recovered. EARTHQUAKES. Constantinople, Oct. 6.-Fresh earthquake shocks at Gallipoli and Adrinople, leading commercial towns of Turkey, created much consternation and caused some damage, but no loss of life. CONKLING AND THE CABINET. Philadelphia, Oct. 6.-The Ledger's New York special states positively that the President has offered Conkling the post of Secretary of the Treasury and he has accepted it with the understanding that he will enter upon the duties of the office when the regular session commences. GUITEAU AND HIS COUNSEL. Washington, Oct. 6.-Attorney Scoville remained two hours with his client Guiteau, yesterday morning. He found the President killer more apprehensive and humble. Guiteau furnished a list of witnesses he desired being called on the stand. He is willing to leave the decision whether a plea of insanity shall be made or not, to the counsel. Scoville relies upon the evidence that the people here support the plea |
