Show MISSIONARY EXPERIENCE. Editor Leader:-Thinking that a few lines from this state might be interesting to the readers of your valuable paper, I now avail myself of the opportunity of writing to you. Bro. George G. Noble and myself were called at the last April Conference, and set apart to fill a mission in the state of Ohio. We left home on the 19th arriving at Lina, this state, on the 29th where we spent a few days very pleasantly with my relations, and then proceeded to Elysia according to instructions received from President Wm. M. Palmers, and was kindly received there by the few Saints living there. We labored in Loraine and adjoining counties until July 15th when we came to this place, and were kindly received by my relatives. We labored here a short time, and then started for Sylvester, Michigan to attend conference there which was held there on 20th and 21st of August. We had a very pleasant time while there and received much good instruction from Prest. Palmer. After spending 10 days with the Elders and Saints we returned to this place and resumed our labors, and have held some 27 meetings since we arrived in this state. We have had some little trouble in getting houses, being refused a number, but are able to hold meetings every Sunday nearly. We have been trying to hold evening meetings during the week but don't meet with a great deal of success. The people as a general rule think Sunday meetings enough to attend, and it seems that they only come to hear us out of curiosity, two meetings, being about all they will attend. We had an appointment out for last evening and had not commenced our meeting, as we were in hopes of more coming, when we were assailed with a shower of rotten eggs which were thrown through the window at us, and covered our clothes with the filth, which we haven't succeeded in entirely removing yet, though we worked several hours at it. We haven't found out who were engaged in the affair, nor have the officers of the hall or place done anything to catch the culprits. There has been a ?? ?? to excite the people against us, claiming that we made the remark that we wished Prest. Garfiled had been titled with ??, and that we were glad he was dead, and it seems that there is a ?? of roughs here who are trying to drive us from the county ?? such false reports as the above. We meet with a great many infidels in our travels, and I am surprised to see infidelity so prevalent as it is, and it is increasing very fast. The crops are not as good this year as usual as they have had so much hot, dry weather. During July and August there was scarcely any rain and many springs and wells dried up, causing a great scarcity of water. We expect to labor in this county and vicinity for some time yet, as we want [unreadable] and warn to repentance this generation, for I realize that the time is short, for the gospel to be preached to the nations of the earth. Accept my hearty congratulations on the [unreadable] and also my thanks for the copy which is being sent to me. I give the paper away when I ?? and I think it will do much good. ?? thanking you for the paper, I remain your fellow ?? in the gospel, [unreadable] Oct. 1st, 1881. |
