Show again in the flesh, ns there was no set time for mo to be obsent on my mission. Missionary. incidents. In the spring of 1857 at a general conference in Salt Lake City, there were a goodly number of Elders called to go on missions to the States, to Europe, California and the Sandwish Islands, and among the latter was your humble servant. Willian H. Hooper, of Salt Lake City, familiarly known as "Captain Hooper," had a heard of cattle, a band of horses and ten tons of Hour to be sent to the land of gold. The elders for the west were to travel with and help drive this stock, under the direction direc-tion of William It. Smith, of Centerville, Davis County, Utah-Reaching Utah-Reaching Call's Fort, in BoxElder County, we halted to brand and number the cattle, (700 head), and while doing so, Captain Hooper was struck in the side by an ox, breaking a rib, which was heard to snap by several of the boys, but by the prayer of faith by laying lay-ing on of hands he wTas soon made easy. While here, some of the boys while at play in the tent broke one of the tent poles, and the handle off a frying pan; one fellow was accidently stabbed in the leg wite a pair scissors. For this Captain Hooper gave to them a sharp rebuke for their rudeness. In the evening the captain called us together and told us that Bishop Smith of Centerville would take charge of the ! heard and be our Captain and for us to obey and respect him accordingly. He exhorted ue to live our religion and be good boys, have our little meetings, etc. Calls Fort, May 22nd, This morning each man was furnished horse, saddle and bridle, and to prevent mistakes and confusion every man's saddle and bridle was numbered and set down to him in a book. There were 23 men, 14 guns and 6 pistols. After arriving at Bear Eiver, Captain Whooper left us and returned re-turned to his home in Salt Lake City, while we continued on our i jurney slowly, and camped ct the point of the mountain that night. By the way we saw a rattle snake and he was told to quietly leave and he should not be hurt, and far as I know, he obeyed orders and has not been seen nor heard from since. Before leaving my home at Farmington, where I lived at that time, I laid my hands on my wife and babe and blessed them and dedicated them to the Lord, for I knew not when I would see them |
