Show visited the melon patch of Charles A. Terry and cut and slashed his melons up in a fearful shape; but there is one satisfaction in this instance in-stance the depredators are known and if they visit the premises again, are liable to be caught. The owners of these melon patches, patch-es, orchards and vineyards have borne this kind of treatment until forbearance has ceased to be a virtue vir-tue and they are now preparing to have their rights, and it may be at the expense of some the wilful depredator, dep-redator, unless they stop short. When we lived in Provo, years I ago, we well remember the horrible fate of a melon stealer. A hard working, one armed man, had a nice melon patch and he had worked hard to get it, and one day he saw and heard a crowd planing to make a raid on his melons that night and so he prepared to give them a warm reception. He loaded his shotgun and lay ready for them, intending to lame the depredators so he could have them arrested and prosecuted. Soon a crowd came, aud when they got into the melon patch, he took aim low down so as to hit them in the legs, but one poor boy who had disobeyed his father's kind counsel "not to steal," was down on his hands and knees, feeling for the melons, and he received the shot in his face and was instantly killed. "THOU SHALT NOT STEAL!" Filferers, Sewarel From the numerous complaints throughout the country, we deem it wisdom to utter a word of warning to a certain claso of individuals, before be-fore some of them are laid low and have to be placed in that long sleep from "whence no man returneth" until he shall come forth and stand before the judgement seat of God, to be judged by the works done in the flesh, for every act, whether good or evil, are recorded in" the books, for we read in the 20th chapter chap-ter and 12th verse of Revelations: "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God;, and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book Well, to make a long story short, circumstances compelled the one armed man to go to Prest. Brigham Young, and after telling him the circumstances of the case, Prest. Young told the one armed man to go ahead and kill all the thieves. We can tell you this case was a lesson les-son to the balance of the thieves that were left, and it ought to be a warning that the thieves in this vicinity vi-cinity should heed, before some of them are put qnietly to rest, in the same way. We have been told that Pfest. Young once said, "If you .catch a white man stealing, shoot him; if you catch an Indian stealing teach him better." White folks know better than to take that which does not belong to them, but the natives have been use to stealing all their lives. I It is no greater sin to knock a of life: and the c-ead were- judged out of those things which were written writ-ten in the books, according to their works. (Verse 15.) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." ; So how necessary it is for each of us to live in that way that we will not be ashamed to stand before our Heavenly father and receive the reward re-ward we justly merit J In this city, especially, there are many who have been troubled for years by pilferers, or, if you please, in more plain language, a set of thieves, who have visited melon patches, orchards and vineyards, and man down and take the money out of his pocket than it is to go into his orchard, vineyard, melon or corn patch and pilfer the fruit or other products therefrom, for it is not your property and you have no business with it; and these thieving depredators depreda-tors must cease, or suffer the bitter consequences I The good old book says, "Thou j shalt not steal," and "He that hath stole, steal no more," and we sincerely sin-cerely hope that this word of warning warn-ing will be duly heeded and not only stop fruit and melon thieves, but that all who have been in the habit of stealing wine or anything else, will stop short and "steal no more!" have helped themselves to all they 1 could eat, night after night and time I after time,as though they had no regard re-gard for the rights of their fellow raanj And not only this, but , not satisfied with stealing what they can make way with, they then destroy a large portion of what they have not stolen.. ' ' . . ' . Only a few nights ago, thieves |
