Show On the 5th we met a company of whites on their way to the States, going by way of Salt Lake City. A halt was made for an hour, when letters were written by " our men to their friends. I penciled pen-ciled off a few lines to my wife. The next day our camp was visited by Indians and the Chief had a paper asking for pay for traveling through his country. Captain Smith gave the Chief and men some flour and to each of them he gave a shirt, which pleased them and they departed,' apparently well satisfied. Reaching Stockton Springs, we halted for a short time unhitched and took lunch. Here we found the grave of Brother Leonard, who was shot at this pbce by the Indians a few years since. We pass a great many wagon tire lying by the way. Made about 18 miles today and camped at Gravelly Ford. Some of the boy 8 sold a give out ox to an Indian for two dressed buckskins. Wednesday 10th. This morning some Indians came into camp and one of them had a ten dollar gold coin, 75 cents in silver and a copper cent, and wanted to buy a gun, no trade was made. Today we traveled about 14 miles and camped. Here I caught a small animal in a slew near the river. It had a nice fine fur. No one knew what it was but supposed by some to be a young Otter.
