Show A CRUEL MUEDEE AT GOSHEN. Bartholomew Race SHoots His Wife and Commits Suicide. Special Correspondence Salt Lake Tribune. Pavson, Utah, Jan. 29. A shocking shock-ing murder and suicide took place at Goshen, Utah, yesterday morning morn-ing about 8 o'clock. Bartholomew Race shot his wife while in bed, and then, turned the weapon 011 himself, and killed himself. him-self. . Commissioner Peery was wired for assistance from the, county and two coffins were ordered and sent today. ... Race was perfectly rational at the time, for he deliberately told the two oldest girls to go milk the cows, then he fastened two outside, doors, placed nails in the casings and tied them inside, the locks being, out , of repair, placed the other children in the room, went into the bedroom and fastened that door securely in a similar manner. , His' wife became alarmed and pleaded with him not to kill her. This was heard by the girls who had fare home. Race seemed much better and promised he would . endeavor en-deavor to make a reformation. Arriving home he was kindly re-j re-j ceived by the family and' in three days his wife was confined. Soon it seemed his old madness came on him and he thought again he was going to die. But he said he could not bear the thought of leaving his wife, and he told the children in the morning that he was going to kill himself and their mother When the midwife left the house he set about carrying out his threats. The children were - locked out and he got his revolver, telling his sick wife she would have to die. She pleaded with him not to shoot her, and in her weak condition even attempted at-tempted to get out of the bed, when he seized her and fired a bullet into her head. He next turned the weapon on himself and fell to the floor a corpse. , ' The shooting and screams-of the children aroused all Goshen, and soon neighbors had broken into the house just, in time to rescue the babe, for the firing had ignited the bed clothing. . ,j 4 just come to the door and heard the ' shots, and they ran ttr a neighbor's ' for help.'""'"' ' Mr. Gurley came and broke into the house and found Race and his wife both dead by a bullet in the head by the , temple. Blood , and brains spattered the bedding and "walls while the floor, which was covered with their blood, was a horrible hor-rible spectacle to witness. Mr. Gurley found the infant in bed alive, aad the bed on; fire from the powder. Had he beeji a few moments later the house would have been in flames . Nine children remain, re-main, the youngest but a few hours old. The midwife had remained through the night with the family. The Goshen people are", indignant and would not allow Race interred in the cemetery by the side of his wife. The Payson people held services ser-vices over the remains of the wife.
