Show iimmm tsie development de-velopment OF OIL The Walsh-Pittmau bill seems to be a measure under which oil devel-opment devel-opment in such states as Utah, Colo-orado Colo-orado and Wyoming could be secured. secur-ed. It is generally conceded that while it leit much to be desired on the part o the oil interests, it is probably as iavorable a measure as cqujd oe passed at this time and that an effort to "change it would undoubtedly hold up the passage of any measure permitting per-mitting oil development in the mountain states. A new measure has been substituted, substi-tuted, however, by department heads killiug the remedial sections 16 and 17 of the Walsh bill by substituting a provision granting a lease on each producing veil heretofore drilled on withdrawn lands and with only sufficient suf-ficient ground to operate such well ?.nd without the right to drill any additional wells on such land. This provision u simply a "killer" for iol development and it would seem that our public officials could see the necessity of measures which would ttabilize and safeguard the big industry now being developed Instead In-stead of oa'eilug measures td kill it. The senate has attempted to help oil development In the west and it Is tO'be hoped the house will not give It a set back at this late day. |
