Show I THE GROWING CITY corm Tm tired said the city and discouraged dis the trouble asked the Queen of ot the Ule Fairies as she perched upon one of ot the high buildings Oh It Is hard said the city tobe to tobe tobe be a n city city You never seem to please anyone They build you yon up and tear you down and ond change you about until you yon are worn out ont Oh Ob but they do like you yon City I know t they ey do do the Queen of the Fairies said Well sometimes they dont don't show me that they do the city answered They will never let me add any charm or any manners manners you you know a city cant can't get Its best manners in a short time It takes a 11 long long time for a city to really be gracious and lovely Now It Is different with the country coun coun- try try- The country can be far simpler in Its ways The uThe country Is naturally so beau beau- The country doesn't have to depend depend depend de de- pend on handsome buildings and quaint places The country has sunsets and sunrises sunrises sunrises sun sun- rises and trees and fields and wild wildflowers wildflowers flowers and lots of ot color Of course the sun rises over in the East and sets over in the West here but its it's not the same as In the thc country coun coun- try try the the buildings almost crowd It out o of the way And the sun feels that you know The sun doesn't show himself nearly nearly nearly near near- ly so much In the city for just that reason But I wish they'd let me rest for tor awhile I r feel so like a child during the ages when he or she Is growing so very fastI fastI fast I ur feel as though they were constantly constantly constantly con con- letting down my skirts or making something over again for me And I will not have any charm of my own any particular attractiveness attractive attractive- ness ness ness' of ot my own If I have to be rushed so I INow Now there was a lovely building tai 1 F t the Trouble Asked the tho th Queen down one of the streets and It would always alwa's have been beautiful to see I was very fond of that building It was a touch to my ray city costume that I liked Immensely But they tore it down down or or partly tore It down They did enough to It so that none of Its beauty was left And they changed it all about did about did horrible things to It And that was one of my very best buildings And it does tire me so Of Ot course I I am growing and of ot course my city limits are being stretched and added to all the time But when they destroy what few beautiful old old to me at any rate landmarks I have I feel teel so sadI sadI sadI sad I feel so weary then I feel like giving up the whole Job of ot being a city and moving o out t to the country myself I feel as though I could Just let them shift shUt for themselves themselves themselves them them- selves so that It would be neither city nor country II But ut I suppose Ill I'll keep on being a city though It is a rushing hard life lite at times Particularly when they wont won't let me have nice manners manners They will wUl pull me down and build me up and make mako me appear awkward and ill at easeL ease I L appear awkward and III Ill at ease then Oh I am so very tired And the city sighed a great sigh Poor City said the Queen of the Fairies dont sigh So many love you So many love lore to poke through your queer dear different streets So many love lo to wander all about you to know you well they say You are growing still You must be patient for tor a time For youre you're having having hav hav- ing growing aches and pains now But nut youre you're loved by so many many many people I 1 IDear IDear Dear Queen of ot the Fairies said the city how you have cheered me mc I 1 |
